Hong Kong is well known for its culinary scene, but as a vegan, I had some reservations before my trip. The prevalence of <a href="https://www.happycow.net/asia/china/hong_kong/hong_kong_island" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">HappyCow</a> green pins did provide some reassurance, but it wasn’t until my visit that I accepted I had nothing to worry about. In fact, its plant-based community delivered, and far exceeded, my expectations. For those not familiar with HappyCow, it is a community-supported app that maps vegan, vegetarian, and vegan-friendly eateries and businesses. The green pins represent the 100% vegan establishments and is a must for food planning when travelling. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1723409357/Image_1_25_8fa90096e3.png" alt="Image 1(25).png"> <h2>Reminiscent of my youth</h2>As a child, I fondly remember my trips to Chinatown and my predilection for sui mai and char siu bao. I was always excited to order both these dishes and I was able to rekindle this emotion at <a href="https://www.instagram.com/veggiekingdomhk/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Veggie Kingdom</a>. Here, the sui mai is mushroom-based, while the sweet, fluffy, steamed bao’s are filled with BBQ veggie ‘pork.’ They were perfect, as were the many other dishes I tried, including the turnip cake, crispy eggplant, and rice noodle rolls. I’d planned a lunchtime visit, as this is when they serve dim sum, and I was fortunate enough to get a table. It is very popular with locals so do try and book in advance. You will not be disappointed. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1723409429/Image_2_12_dbe7961386.png" alt="Steamed sui mai from Veggie Kingdom, Hong Kong."> <h2>The quirkiest of restaurant concepts&nbsp;</h2>If a 1950s American-themed vegan restaurant in Asia sounds appealing, then <a href="https://www.instagram.com/veggie_4love/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Veggie 4 Love</a> is for you. The restaurant has a vintage look and feel and is packed full of period appropriate nick-nacks. A great touch was the old-style TV that loops black and white episodes of the US sitcom <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Love_Lucy" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">I Love Lucy</a>.&nbsp; It is located on the 10th floor of a high-rise building, so isn’t the easiest place to find. Though this set-up is not unusual for this densely populated city. Given the US diner concept, burgers are on the menu, but I opted for more local cuisine: crispy Peking ‘duck’ pancakes and laksa. Both delicious. The showstopper though, was their molten chocolate cake with cream and ice cream. Dark, sweet and gooey. It’s a weakness. What grabbed my attention at <a href="https://www.instagram.com/years.hk/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Be With Years</a> was their lion’s mane curry. I’ve seen this mushroom feature in many online recipes but had yet to try it. It was chunky and tender, working perfectly with the thick curry sauce and accompanying veg, pickles, and appetisers. The bento box was presented on a tray in bowls and was as flavoursome as it was aesthetically pleasing.&nbsp; Their Earl Grey lemon almond tart followed this. With a subtle-tasting, slightly sweet layer sandwiched between a crispy pastry base and fluffy cream topping, I could have easily eaten another slice, or three.&nbsp; This casual dining concept now has four locations across the city, all with slightly different menus. However, the business is more than food. With corporate social responsibility at its core it is a complete lifestyle brand selling everything from houseware to clothing, and <a href="https://www.yearshk.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">much more</a>. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1723409584/Image_4_3_cc7789222a.png" alt="Lion’s mane bento box from Be With Years, Hong Kong."> <h2>Noodle and coconut curry heaven</h2>Top-rated on Happy Cow, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/rootvegan.hk/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Root Vegan</a> was on my hit list while in the city. After a tour of the nearby <a href="https://www.taikwun.hk/en/taikwun/heritage_conservation/buildings" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Tai Kwun</a> heritage site, it was the perfect spot for a mid-afternoon recharge.&nbsp; I find it hard to resist a coconut curry noodle dish, so their bestseller, Khao Soi Northern Thai Curry Noodle, was impossible to say no to. I could have returned again and again to enjoy this spicy soup, topped with fried wonton skins, veg, and soya drumsticks.&nbsp; I also ordered appetisers, soup, and a slice of blueberry cheesecake. All dishes were presented as if they’d been lifted from a page in a cookbook, and they tasted as good as they looked. Their menu is extensive and varied; I only regret that I didn’t try more of their dishes. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1723409654/Image_5_1_e80d0e10ee.png" alt="Noodles, vegan drumsticks, and appetisers from Root Vegan, Hong Kong."> <h2>A taste of Europe</h2>After nearly a week in the city, I craved an all-day breakfast, and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/lncoffeehk" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">LN Coffee</a> came to the rescue. The “LN” stands for loving nature and this vegan bakery has a wide selection of Western and Asian animal-friendly dishes.&nbsp; The breakfast included the typical scrambled bean curd, mushrooms, beans and tomato. It really hit the spot.&nbsp; While flicking through the menu, their apple and cinnamon French toast caught my eye. I ordered and was expecting a relatively small portion, but it was almost the size of the many high-rise buildings in the city. I powered through and left satiated to the point of bursting. It gets five stars from me. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1723409772/Image_6_ca62d04b46.jpg" alt="French toast from LN Coffee, Hong Kong."> <h2>My sushi obsession continues</h2>As proudly declared in my recent <a href="https://www.v-landuk.com/article/cape-town-s-table-mountain-and-tables-topped-with-vegan-delights" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Cape Town article</a>, I am obsessed with sushi. Fortunately, close to where I was staying was a little café with the cutest courtyard for alfresco dining. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/wanaka.hk/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Wanaka</a> can be found just behind the famous and historic Grade I listed building, the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_House_(Hong_Kong)" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Blue House</a>.&nbsp; A sushi bowl on their menu promised a stacked ‘salmon’ sushi drenched in homemade Thousand Island dressing and fresh mango chunks. It was healthy, refreshing, and super tasty. I couldn’t help myself, so I ordered the lasagna that was layered with homemade vegan mozzarella cheese, eggplant, sweet bell pepper, olives, and courgette. The accompanying pesto sauce simply elevated it further. Both were mouthwatering. Only after my visit did I realise it was part of the Years group where I’d tried the lion’s mane. I’m really impressed with what they are doing in Hong Kong. A multitude of Hong Kong highlights for vegan diners

Upon arriving in Cape Town you will be struck by the magnificence of the iconic Table Mountain. For me, as a foodie, it was not the only table of interest in this picturesque city. In fact, before travelling I always check <a href="https://www.happycow.net/europe/scotland/inverness/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">HappyCow</a> way before planning what tourist attractions to add to my to-do list. <h2>From flight to food</h2>It was a long overnight flight and as I disembarked the plane I was already planning my first food stop. So, after my hotel check-in I went straight to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/romeoandvero" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Romeo &amp; Vero</a>. This ‘Vegan Butcherie’ lived up to its name. With a menu packed full of mushroom-based meat alternatives it was almost impossible to choose. After much deliberation, my friend and I opted for the ‘ribs’ and ‘chicken.’ Both came with perfectly seasoned homecooked chips and a side salad. They were delicious and almost too realistic - cutting into the breaded drumsticks is a moment I’ll never forget. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1720617163/Image_1_22_9c67e1eec1.png" alt="‘Chicken’ drumsticks (vegan equivalent) from Romeo &amp; Vero ‘Vegan Butcherie,’ Cape Town, South Africa"> <h2>Next on the list… wine</h2>Vineyards surround Cape Town, so a visit to one felt mandatory. We headed east to Stellenbosch to visit <a href="https://www.instagram.com/spierwinefarm/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Spier</a>, a working winery and vineyard. It is easy to see why it was voted one of the 100 World's Best Vineyards in 2021, and Editor's Choice - Winery of the Year 2022. Just a 30-minute drive away, a day trip is perfectly doable. This was our plan, although the luxurious onsite hotel makes overnight stays easy if you want to escape the city for an extended period. We arrived early, allowing us to wander the grounds and soak up the sun. I welcomed the vitamin D boost after a dark winter in London. There were historic buildings and curious art sculptures dotted about to peruse and admire.&nbsp; It was soon time for wine tasting. We enthusiastically followed the directions to where we needed to be and were warmly greeted by the host. She escorted us to our table on the veranda where we enjoyed the cooling breeze and shade from the wicker canopy.&nbsp; The knowledgeable, enthusiastic sommelier reassured us their wines were vegan, so we opted for the Spier tasting selection. To accompany the alcohol, we also ordered the garden bowl. This tasty selection of bread, crudites, and lentil hummus are also labelled vegan-friendly on their website. The combination of the weather, company, food and wine made it one of my most enjoyable experiences. Do plan to go if you can, but make sure you book in advance, giving them at least 48 hours’ notice. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1720617236/Image_2_9_439ff0c619.png" alt="Three upright bottles of vegan wine on a wooden table from Spier Wines’ tasting selection, Stellenbosch, South Africa"><h2> </h2><h2>An early start</h2>The surrounding peaks have several trail options, but <a href="https://hikelionshead.co.za/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Lion's Head</a> gets the most attention. It is a reasonable 5.5km round trip and takes about 1.5 hours to hike to the top, and about an hour to return. It is mostly a steady incline, but can get quite challenging at times. On the most difficult route, there are even ladders and chains to assist. (These were the most fun parts for me.)&nbsp;The objective was to reach the summit in time for sunrise. At the car drop-off point, I could already see specks of lights flicking on the mountainside. These super-early starters were well-prepared with their headlamps. I started my ascent just as dawn began to break. As I circled the elevation I was able to view the city in all its glory. Both it and I basked in the sun's golden glow as it appeared in the distant horizon. I was told it was a very popular activity for first dates, and I can see why. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1720617304/Image_3_1_190ff0a785.png" alt="View of Lion’s Head Peak at sunrise, Cape Town, South Africa"> <h2>Post-trek sustenance</h2>Some are indifferent to doughnuts, but not me. This meant that I had a keen eye on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/grumpyandrunt" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Grumpy &amp; Runt</a> and was unwilling to leave the city without stopping by. This ‘Little Deli &amp; Donuts’ heaven had a display cabinet full of sweet treats. I gravitated to the custard-filled doughnut which I ordered alongside a cheese and mushroom toastie and a hot chocolate. I’ve never been more satisfied.&nbsp; Sadly, their recent Instagram posts state that they have ceased trading. While the exact reasons are unknown it does present a reminder for us to support vegan businesses as much as we can. It would be a real shame if ethical businesses like these disappeared from our highstreets. Grumpy &amp; Runt do suggest a comeback so I’m crossing everything that they make a triumphant return. Please do show them some love if they do. <h2>Beach day… and night</h2>Camps Bay is to the southwest of the city. This long stretch of beach and natural rock swimming pool is ideal for a day of swimming and sunbathing. There is lots to keep you entertained with a long promenade of bars, a mall, and a theatre. The only vegan eatery in this neighbourhood is <a href="https://www.plantcafe.co.za/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Plant Cafe</a>. Open all day, it serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with plenty of desserts to satisfy anyone with a sweet tooth. I arrived in the evening, ordered a burger and pastry, and sat on the balcony watching the sunset over the ocean. It was a glorious end to a carb-filled day. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1720617374/Image_4_1_18cd9ad4fc.png" alt="Sunset at Camps Bay (suburb of Cape Town, South Africa)"> <h2>A sushi obsession</h2>When I checked out local eateries, I was immediately drawn to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/plushiplatters?igsh=NDdscHF6eDVpeDZ6" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Plushi</a>. This HappyCow top-rated restaurant has some stiff competition given my recent sushi experiences in <a href="https://www.instagram.com/legumisushi/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Lisbon</a> and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/123vegan_w1/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">London</a>. And you know what, I think it might have been the best I’ve had. Their menu is extensive and includes spring rolls, poke bowls, and dumplings.&nbsp; I was keen to try every sushi menu item, so I did not hold back. After all, I was on holiday. It was immaculately presented and every piece tasted sublime. The highlights were definitely the Salmoon Rose (carrot salmon and avocado, topped with vegan mayo and Plushi Caviaar) and the Crab Salad Inari (topped with jackfruit 'crab' salad, celery, red onion and spring onions).&nbsp; A bonus was the beetroot brownie. Chocolatey and healthy, I’m sure. I was so full, though, I saved the brownie for breakfast the next morning - an optimal way to start the day. <h2>Heading south</h2>For some of the most spectacular ocean views, a car trip along the coast of the national park, heading to the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/capepointsa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Cape Point</a> lighthouse, is a must. You can jump on a Flying Dutchman funicular at the car park if you want to spare yourself the uphill trek. However you decide to get there, you won’t be disappointed. From this elevated vantage point, you can look out at the vastness of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Simply breathtaking. As you travel south, make sure to stop at Boulders Beach to visit the <a href="https://www.sanparks.org/parks/table-mountain/what-to-do/attractions/boulders-penguin-colony" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Boulders Penguin Colony</a>. This sandy beach area is home to a free-living colony of African penguins. I stumbled across several as I clambered under and over the various boulders but took care to keep a respectable distance. Boardwalks have been constructed to ensure people are able to view these adorable animals without encroaching on their home. It was a joy given penguins are my second favourite animal. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1720617481/Image_5_ce41ade080.png" alt="African penguins lounging on boulders, Boulders Penguin Colony, Simons Town, South Africa"> <h2>The best till last</h2>I saved <a href="https://www.instagram.com/tablemountainca" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Table Mountain</a> for the last day. Given I’d already hiked Lion’s Head, I opted for the easier option: the cable car. You have to purchase your tickets in advance and at busy times, you can expect to queue.&nbsp; Table Mountain is well known for its ‘tablecloth’ of clouds. These are often draped over its plateau, which I was confronted with upon arrival. This meant no queues and quick access to the cable car. It felt like a win.&nbsp; As the car glided up the side of the mountain it soon hit the bank of clouds, obscuring the view. The mountain top is a rocky nature reserve with dedicated pathways for walkers. As I strolled along these paths, I recalled the movies I’d watched with eerie scenes of characters walking through the mist of the Yorkshire moors. It made it feel more like an adventure.&nbsp; I was also fortunate that the cloud cleared before descending, sot I got to view the cityscape from a different vantage point and it was stunning. I couldn’t have asked for a better end to my trip. <h2>No shortage of vegan eateries</h2>You can be certain you will not leave Cape Town hungry. There were many other restaurants and cafés I tried. It would be irresponsible of me if I didn’t acknowledge them as they were all special in their own plant-based way. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/bambooplantpower?igsh=MWFkeDNsZGRwemFsYQ==" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">BamBoo Plant Power</a> is on a mission to help their community eat better. With a wide selection of plant-based toasties, bowls and many mains, it is certainly doing that.&nbsp; <a href="https://www.instagram.com/theconsciouskitchenza/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">The Conscious Kitchen</a> focuses on making healthier and eco-friendly choices available. The Mean Greens juice and smoked ‘salmon’ &amp; cream cheese bagel certainly ticked those boxes.&nbsp; <a href="https://www.instagram.com/okjacafe/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Okja</a> is a bakery serving delicious coffee using their own branded soya milk. They specialise in pastries, and their frangipane swirl and choc hazelnut twist were too difficult for me to resist.&nbsp; <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1720617582/Image_6_2e827af7c4.png" alt="Frangipane swirl from Okja, Camps Bay, South Africa"> <a href="https://www.instagram.com/thali_capetown/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Thali</a> was the only non-vegan restaurant I ate at, but they are still worthy of a mention. This contemporary Indian eatery, with its industrial décor, has a set vegan menu that is beautifully curated. This culinary gem has been delighting diners with its innovative plant-based dishes for several years. Dive into their Al Pastor Tacos, brimming with marinated soy and jackfruit, or savour their irresistible Brisket Birria Tacos. Whether you're a seasoned vegan or just dipping your toes into plant-based eating, Pepitas promises a delightful experience for all. Well, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/mashupmarket?igsh=MWk2bmlqMWdjb3NzeA==" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Mashup Market and Deli</a> is no different. The owner and her mother greeted me the minute I walked in, asking how I was doing, and giving recommendations. They gave me a whole plate of samples from their hummus spreads to ‘meats’ and ‘cheese.’ Getting one of their plant-based sandwiches at their deli is also an absolute must. It is undoubtedly the best sandwich I have ever had (pictured below). I got the Classic Italian and cannot wait to go back to try them all! This is definitely your one-stop shop for all things vegan. Those leaning into a light lunch can opt for a salad, whereas a famished customer can easily find enough sustenance with a colossal wrap. Naturally, I opted for the latter. 7 best vegan spots in Dallas: A local’s guide

I am well aware that being a London-based vegan means I am spoilt. It has a plethora of vegan restaurants to choose from, so venturing out of the city can invoke a sense of uncertainty, particularly when planning trips to remote locations. Thankfully, there are an increasing number of plant-based options to be unearthed, and a recent trip to the Scottish Highlands presented me with several surprising vegan finds. Regardless of where your adventure takes you, pre-planning pays dividends. My go-to is <a href="https://www.happycow.net/europe/scotland/inverness/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">HappyCow</a>, and I was thrilled to discover two vegan cafés close to where I stayed in Inverness. <h2>An instant favourite and a returning visitor</h2>Upon arrival, I was just in time to catch a late lunch at <a href="https://www.instagram.com/culturecafedeli" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Culture Cafe &amp; Deli</a>. Its homely dining room aesthetic and friendly staff make you feel instantly welcome. With a display cabinet filled with fresh salads, toasties, and mouthwatering cakes, I knew I’d leave beyond satiated.&nbsp; I ordered a mixed salad bowl, breakfast burrito, and risotto ball. I relished every dish, but the showstopper was the accompanying turmeric latte. It was flavourful and frothy with a nice spicy kick. I was so smitten that I returned every morning on my daily trek to stock up on toasties for lunch and a latte for the car ride. It would also be remiss of me if I didn’t mention the fudge from a local supplier they sold in their little pantry; it was soft and creamy with just the right amount of sweetness. I chose the whisky flavour - I was in Scotland, after all - and its subtle undertone worked perfectly. The resulting popularity encouraged many other eateries to offer something similar. Where I did not expect to find one was at the <a href="https://www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/corrieshalloch-gorge" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Corrieshalloch Gorge</a> National Nature Reserve.&nbsp; This relatively new visitor centre is the gateway to a spectacular mile-long canyon carved out during the ice age. I grabbed a sausage roll at their café before walking through the woodland trails and taking in the stunning views from the various suspension bridges.&nbsp; <h2>The other one</h2>Back in Inverness, nestled at the back of the Victorian Market food hall is <a href="https://www.instagram.com/salt_n_fire_inverness" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Salt N Fire</a> café. This is the second fully vegan eatery in the city. One of the benefits of this street food vendor is the late-night opening on Friday and Saturday.&nbsp; After a day of exertion and fresh air their deep-fried wontons and peanut-topped Szechuan noodles were unbelievably satisfying. While there are many Pan-Asian dishes on their menu, it is international in nature so there is something for everyone. Definitely one to visit when in town. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1715853322/IMG_4598_91d812e90e.png" alt="Salt N Fire wontons in Inverness">Mark Flood <h2>Heading west from Inverness</h2>Fort William sits on the west coast of the Highlands, so I headed there to visit another fully vegan café, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/thewildcatfortwilliam" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">The Wildcat</a>. This was the perfect destination, as the route took me along the banks of Loch Ness. There is no shortage of picturesque stops along the way, so it took a while to get from one end to the other, and I added many more visually stunning images to my digital photo album. Unfortunately, despite keeping a watchful eye on the lake I didn’t manage to catch the elusive Nessie. One day, maybe. With additional stops at the canal locks at Fort Augustus and Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Scotland, I finally arrived at Fort William. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1715853405/IMG_4599_165692000c.png" alt="Fort Augustus Locks in Scotland">Mark Flood At the café, I was presented with one of the largest displays of cakes and sweet pastries I’ve ever encountered. Despite this sugary distraction, I ordered something savoury. As I waited for the food to be served, I admired the framed photography hanging on the walls. Each image conveyed a poignant message around animal rights and environmental destruction and reinforced the need for us all to do better. With a hearty lentil soup and a sweet potato curry filling my stomach to bursting, I ordered more treats to takeaway. The cream-topped hot chocolate, more chocolate in cake form, and the raspberry-layered flapjack got my vote. I also couldn’t resist purchasing a couple of their bold statement bamboo coasters. I wanted to challenge myself and burn off some excess calories after several days of indulgence. In summer, there is lots on offer, including guided walks, biking, and even a mini railway. In winter, it transforms into the perfect destination for skiing.&nbsp; It was cold and wet when I went, so after my trek, I headed to the café for a hot drink to warm up. I was also a little peckish, but expectations were low. However, not only did they have a plant-based cheese and pesto sandwich, but there was also a cabinet full of delectable sweet treats from <a href="https://www.instagram.com/purebakeryhighland/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Pure Bakery Highland</a>. I ordered the chocolate and jammie dodger cakes and the gluten-free lemon cookie for my friends and I to share. Surprising vegan finds in the Scottish Highlands

Touch down on the other side of the planet, a country renowned for its stunning beaches, an assortment of Mother Nature's beautifully crafted terrains, Vegemite, mullets, the outback, and unique creatures (that may or may not be trying to kill you!) to Sydney.&nbsp; While Sydney might not be as famous as Melbourne for its vegan status (boasting 4th in the world), the city holds its own in the vegan world. After one year of living in Sydney, every corner seems to be sprinkled with vegan-friendly choices. Every coffee shop is full of plant-milk varieties, and vegan options are staples on most menus; one suburb (Newtown) even shows off a street lined with vegan eateries. Choices? You’ve got plenty. Here are my seven go-to vegan eateries in Sydney. <h2>7. Oh My Days&nbsp;</h2>A revelation for anyone sceptical about vegan baking, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/ohmydaysglebe/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Oh My Days</a> has a treasure trove of pastries that could convert even the most devout traditionalists. Offering both sweet and savoury, each pastry is flaky, buttery and crafted to perfection; from almond croissants and cinnamon rolls to indulgent apple crumble danishes, they have mastered the art of vegan sweet treats, but it doesn't stop there; their savoury selection includes burgers, burritos, ‘chicken’ bahn mi, croissants, and everything in between prove that they can match and even surpass their traditional counterparts. My recommendations: Almond Croissant, Apple Crumble Danish, and Macadamia Milk Latte. <h2>6. Peace Harmony</h2>Nestled in the middle of Sydney's CBD, this dainty hole-in-a-wall restaurant has one colossal menu, with an array of Thai cuisine to choose from.&nbsp; Prepare for a taste explosion: Expertly seasoned dishes are robust and bursting with complex flavours that provide satisfying depth when hitting the palate. The staff at <a href="https://www.happycow.net/reviews/peace-harmony-sydney-4465" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Peace Harmony</a> are attentive and eager to provide the perfect recommendation for you! Gigi Pizzeria</h2>One of the standout stars of Newtown has redefined the vegan pizza landscape, everything that I assumed a plant-based pizza could be has been blown out of the water by <a href="https://www.instagram.com/gigipizzeria/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Gigi</a>.&nbsp; Their commitment to authentic, flavourful, and entirely plant-based Italian cuisine is evident in every dish they serve.&nbsp; Fresh ingredients, infused with bold flavours neither overpowering nor understated, with a crust perfectly crisp created by the fire concealed in their centrepiece stone oven.&nbsp; Forget vegan cheese that doesn’t melt and sticks to the roof of your mouth like a film, Gigi’s has some witchcraft in that kitchen because this stuff is phenomenal. My recommendation: Salsiccia E Broccoli (Beyond sauce, garlic, and chilli sauteed broccoli, nut ricotta, mozzarisella, green vie parmesan and extra virgin olive oil). <h2>4. Little Turtle</h2>On the outskirts of Enmore, another Thai restaurant, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/littleturtlerestaurant/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Little Turtle</a>, shines through with its inventive dishes while being committed to being health-conscious.&nbsp; Brimming with creative plant-based dishes, the menu leaves me both impressed and satisfied.&nbsp; You’re drawn in through the door by the smell of aromas that embody the essence of traditional Thai cooking with a modern twist. An ideal spot for both vegans and those looking to explore plant-based cuisine My recommendation: Hor Mok (pictured below), Trio of Baos, and Pineapple Rice.&nbsp; <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1714165666/IMG_4293_bf83d02ac7.png" alt="Hor Mok (Thai vegan cuisine) from Little Turtle, Sydney, Australia.">Callum Weir <h2>3. Shift Eatery</h2>Tucked away in the streets of Surry Hills, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/shifteatery/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Shift</a> has become my morning go-to for coffee every day (I'm writing this while drinking their iced latte).&nbsp; Although quaint, it's a place that challenges and delights, showing that the shift towards veganism is not only easy but incredibly delicious.&nbsp; The moment you step inside, you'll be greeted by the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the welcoming staff. Their friendliness and efficiency are the heartbeats of this little café.&nbsp; They've somehow perfected vegan boiled egg slices that are visually convincing and packed with an authentic flavour that leaves you both confused and amazed. Paired with the smoky, savoury vegan bacon, it’s an excitingly unreal combination. My recommendations: The Best Vegan Bacon and Eggs Bagel in The World. <h2>2. Vandal</h2>Located in the heart of Newtown, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/vandal_sydney/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Vandal</a> offers an extraordinary dining experience that transcends the typical ‘vegan tax.’ Their set menu, an absolute steal at $35, presents a six-course journey that escalates in flavour and innovation with each dish.&nbsp; The culinary adventure has an array of mindblowing creations, such as the Ceviche Tostada (pictured below) featuring ‘no-fin tuna’ that challenges your taste buds in the best way possible, both in texture and flavour - this dish sets the tone for a menu full of surprises.&nbsp; Vandal is more than just a dining spot; it celebrates the potential of vegan cuisine. It's a place where each course is a discovery, each flavour a revelation. For anyone looking to explore the heights of what plant-based cooking can achieve, Vandal is a must-visit destination. Despite its modest size, this place is nothing short of incredible.&nbsp; I've indulged in every pie they offer, and they always impress.&nbsp; Celebrating its 15th anniversary, Funky Pies is a pioneer of vegan eating in Sydney. Their pies are second to none, the mash impossibly creamy, and the gravy satisfyingly thick.&nbsp; Each visit is accompanied by a warm smile, a friendly chat, and the assurance of enjoying the best pies around. Opting for a vegan pie elsewhere would feel like an insult. And I'm not alone in my adoration. As I scroll through Instagram as I write this, I see Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian Barker enjoying a meal at this quaint, family-owned establishment. I'm not the only one with great taste! Funky Pies isn’t just a place to eat; it’s a landmark in Sydney’s vegan scene, cherished by celebrities and locals alike. My recommendations: The Funky Chunky (shown in the feature image) or the Butterish Chic’n Pie with mash, peas and gravy.&nbsp; Spoilt for choice is an understatement in Sydney, with 53 vegan eateries on HappyCow (and that's without the array of restaurants showing off their plant-based options). 7 best vegan eateries in Sydney: The insider’s guide

I have been a vegan for over fourteen years, so I have been to countless vegan restaurants in that time, and I can honestly say that <a href="https://www.instagram.com/mahalosthlm/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(78, 167, 46); background-color: transparent;">Maholo</a>, in Stockholm, is one of my favourites. It stands out in so many ways.&nbsp; Established in 2015, Maholo warmly proclaims, “All our food is made with a lot of love for the environment, the animals, and for our wonderful guests.” And I’d add, it’s a wonder of plant-based eating.&nbsp;<h2> </h2><h2>Great menu with a great vibe&nbsp;</h2>My favourite thing about the menu is its repertoire of colour and imagination. Everything looks so impressive and photogenic. I must have taken at least ten photos of every dish I ate.&nbsp; There’s an impressive variety of food and drink choices which are fresh, healthy, and exciting. From breakfast to desserts, there's something to suit your fancy. The inclusion of creative smoothie bowls shows the commitment to healthy eating at any time of the day.&nbsp;&nbsp; The restaurant has two sites in Stockholm, on opposite ends of the city, so that doubles the output of mouth-watering food! The atmosphere and the staff at Mahalo are welcoming and accommodating. My girlfriend and I loved every minute spent there; we visited three times over the getaway. Here’s everything we ate: <h2>Dreamy dinners&nbsp;</h2>On our first visit, we ordered ‘Peas &amp; Love,' a falafel dish with a cabbage salad and a tasty vegan Greek-style cheese. We split that with a juicy java bean burger, the ‘Burger Queen,’ with sweet potato fries and a chipotle mayo.&nbsp; We loved these fries so much that on our second visit we ordered the loaded version, which came with black beans, cashew parmesan and red onion; we had this with a ‘Hooked on a T**na Sandwich,’ a tasty, lemony, curried tuna alternative on toast - one of the best fish replacements I’ve tried. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1710071974/Image_1_18_b4eb04c9ce.png" alt="Loaded sweet potato fries and vegan tuna on toast with avocado and salad from Maholo, Stockholm.">Sean Barrs <h2>Delicious desserts</h2>The desserts did not let us down either. On our first visit, we had banana bread served with blueberry and blackberry compote and sweet cream.&nbsp; We tried the raw blueberry cheesecake the second time, and it rounded the meal off perfectly. The base was made of dates, which made it feel healthy (for a dessert!), yet it was still sweet enough to feel like a treat.&nbsp; <h2>Bountiful breakfast</h2>We returned the next morning for breakfast and ordered a mango smoothie bowl decorated with granola and more fresh fruit, a stack of pancakes with cream and raspberry sauce, and a croissant filled with cream and covered in strawberry sauce. Breakfast was all so delicious and paired perfectly with strong black coffee. Yes, it was as good as it sounds, and the photos don’t do it justice. Try their tartine organic sourdough with homemade jam, their soup of the day or ask for a veganised smashed avocado. <h2 class="ql-align-justify">The Fumbally&nbsp;</h2>To complete our best vegan brunch hotspots in Dublin, visit <a href="https://thefumbally.ie/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">The Fumbally</a>, a neighbourhood café in The Liberties.&nbsp; Their space has a wide open kitchen, mismatched furniture and a fresh produce market, offering some of the best vegan brunch options. The atmosphere is cosy and the sense of community is in the air. Their menu is healthy and made up of mostly local ingredients.&nbsp; The Fumbally offers a vegetarian menu that can be easily veganised: try their lentils, salads, and focaccia sandwiches. However, their main star is the Tuscan beans - a plate of cannellini and borlotti beans on sourdough bread with fermented cabbage and vegan parmesan; unarguably the best in town! And their wine shelves and sourdough stand are just the perfect addition to take home so make sure not to leave empty-handed. Vegan guide for a top-notch trip to Leeds

Christmas in the Big Apple, where joyous people fill the streets, bright twinkling lights adorn every corner, and snow blankets the city's tall trees; it's like a page torn from a storybook.&nbsp; While New York City may be famous for its iconic skyline and bustling streets, during the festive season it transforms into a winter wonderland. This city comes alive with the holiday spirit, and its vegan food scene is nothing short of magical. From uptown Manhattan all the way to downtown, we are spilling the cocoa beans on a vegan's dream come true. <h2 class="ql-align-justify">Upper West Side to Times Square&nbsp;</h2>You didn't think we would come all this way and not try to find some vegan eggnog, did you? We made it our mission to find it, and low and behold, we did at <a href="https://www.instagram.com/blossom.nyc/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Blossom on Columbus</a>! We got the wild mushroom pizza and the grilled cheese and soup to keep us warm (although we think the three drinks each did the trick).&nbsp; After your meal, stroll over to Central Park. A merry vegan Christmas in New York: Celebrate the holidays

When we first stepped foot in Medellín, Colombia, for our 72-hour adventure, we did have reservations about our ability to enjoy the city's food as a vegan traveller, Colombia isn't known for its cuisine, unlike many other countries in its region, nor is it known for a vibrant vegan scene.&nbsp; Were we going to struggle to find plant-based options? Were we going to miss out on eating out, only to sit with a bowl of chips or a salad? Luckily, our worries were completely unnecessary.&nbsp; Medellín surprised us in every possible way by not only offering incredible plant-centric cuisines, a host of incredible adventures, and a rich tapestry of culture but also demonstrating that Colombia's vegan community is rapidly growing.&nbsp; <h2>Our journey begins: Day one</h2>We started by visiting Communa 13, once one of the most dangerous districts in Colombia, known to some as the murder capital; however, it’s now a vibrant hub for art and culture.&nbsp; The streets are covered in murals showing stories of transformation and resilience; being so beautifully illustrated, the murals provide a friendly and lively atmosphere. We joined a local walking tour to learn about the neighbourhood’s troubled history. We learnt that no matter how dire the situation, there’s always hope that it can be improved and revived. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1697363702/Image_1_74_pic_2_fb414432fb.png" alt="Street art mural in Communa 13 in Medellín, Colombia">Callum Weir Before heading to grab a bite to eat, we found ourselves on a concrete football pitch surrounded by a group of exceptionally talented six- to nine-year-olds, whose skills left us in awe. This was more than just a game for them, this was a way of life.&nbsp; This little community they have created revolves around their love for football. Playing against these children was a very humbling experience as they seemed undefeatable, effortlessly weaving the ball with joy. We did admit defeat before heading to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/lentejaexpress/?hl=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Lenteja Express</a> in the district of Poblado.&nbsp; The vegan ceviche was fresh and zesty. The mushroom-based dish was delightful and a must-try for anyone looking for a delicious cruelty-free twist on ceviche (formally a traditional seafood dish). <h2>Our explorations continue: Day two</h2>On our second day in Medellín, we found ourselves immersed in the El Poblado district, an area pulsating with both energy and culture.&nbsp; Our day began with a visit to Parque Lleras, an iconic square that encapsulates the essence of this lively neighbourhood offering quaint and colourful cafés. We treated ourselves to oat milk lattes to start our day of exploring the captivating art installations, until our curiosity led us to a bustling local market, a gold mine full of fresh produce that exceeded any of our expectations, boasting an incredible variety of fruits and vegetables some of which were entirely new to us.&nbsp; The Colombians were more than eager to introduce us to this colourful array of food, allowing us to sample exotic fruits before buying, such as starfruit which stood out with its remarkable blend of sweetness and tanginess, much like sour candy. After, our appetites led us to a little eatery <a href="https://www.instagram.com/vegan.and_veggie/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Vegan &amp; Veggie</a>, a name that was short and sweet but did what it said on the tin, offering an array of plant-based delights, including a beautifully crafted buddha bowl brimming with the freshest vegetables, alongside tacos, which were nothing short of a taste explosion that put anything we could have created to shame. Around the corner was <a href="https://instagram.com/gringotuesdays?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Gringo Tuesdays</a>, a concept that brings travellers and locals together for a unique night in the form of a language and culture exchange. Every Tuesday, people from all walks of life sit down together and let down their cultural barriers, allowing each other to learn from one another, build on their language skills, and immerse themselves in the vibrant Colombian scene. The diverse plant life and soothing ambience was perfect for some mid-morning yoga, stretching our bodies while taking a break from the bustling city, and swapping the commotion of the busy streets with the symphony of birds singing and the soothing sounds of the flowing water.&nbsp; From there we took a cable car to Arvi Park, which overlooked the breathtaking views of the Andes, leaving us in awe. We explored the park’s hiking trails and landscapes that connected us to Colombia’s natural beauty. In the evening, we decided to nourish our bodies at <a href="https://www.instagram.com/vegstation/?utm_medium=copy_link" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Veg Station</a>, a restaurant that offered an authentic taste of Colombia with an abundance of traditional dishes turned plant-based. The feast of arepas, plantain chips, and hearty bean stews took our taste buds on a rollercoaster ride of taste fusions between sweet and savoury, amongst a satisfying mixture of textures. Feeling content we worked the meal off by rollerblading on the city's empty highways. With the roads being closed off to traffic, we glided through, taking in the panoramic views of the city skyline lit up with a variety of different shades and colours with visions of the surrounding mountains that cradled Medellín. It felt like a sensation of freedom and the evening breeze stroked our faces creating an unforgettable memory. While our UK base keeps us rooted in our local plant-based gems, we can't help but be drawn to Barcelona's thriving vegan food culture. Top vegan city in every continent: From Cape Town to Taipei City

When considering vegan-friendly travel destinations, France is not the country that comes to mind. However, we were pleasantly surprised during our last trip to the continent: we decided to book a last-minute ticket and go on a quick Biarritz holiday.&nbsp; We got there on the sunniest afternoon with a very clear plan: get as much sun and try as many vegan restaurants as possible.&nbsp; After extensively researching vegan restaurants in Biarritz, we were excited to try <a href="https://www.instagram.com/xuxubiarritz/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Xuxu</a>. Unfortunately it happened to be closed during our holiday. We had a peek inside the closed establishment, and if you are in the area when it’s open, it certainly looks good to try; we saw that they share super interesting insights about the locally sourced products they use. Speaking of local produce, a trip to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/biarritz_halles_centre_ville/?hl=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Les Halles</a> (the local market) is really a must! The French&nbsp;take pride in producing and consuming locally, and it really shows in their cuisine. We would suggest going early with a straw basket in hand. Pop into <a href="https://www.instagram.com/lobitacafe/?hl=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Lobita</a> for a quick specialty coffee and walk around the different flower, fruit and vegetable stalls. Other recommendations would be <a href="https://www.instagram.com/bloom.biarritz/?hl=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Bloom</a>, a very French épicerie where you can buy spices, olives and even veggie patés in bulk. &nbsp;<a href="http://www.mezzeona.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Mezze Ona</a>, a Lebanese takeaway restaurant (with different locations in the area), has the most delicious hummus and some vegan lunch options.&nbsp; If you are one for sweet treats, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/hungrybelly.biarritz/?hl=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Hungry Belly</a> is really your spot in Biarritz. It was our first stop when we arrived in town, and it was so good that we visited again! Run by a very friendly woman (and her friendly dog), you’ll find amazing coffee and a wide offering of vegan cakes. However, what you’ll be most impressed with is their vegan (and gluten-free) patisserie: especially the soft almond biscuit with a (frozen) pistachio mousse filled with chocolate and peanuts, which was to die for! They also offer some lunch formulas and takeaway options. And if you really want to go all in with the sweet options, try another patisserie in town called <a href="https://www.instagram.com/nutsbiarritz/?hl=es" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Nuts</a>.&nbsp; Another place you can’t miss is having a drink or a meal by the Côte des Basques: an iconic surfing spot which boasts an exceptional setting, where you can see the iconic neo-Medieval mansion that was built on a cliff, iconic <a href="https://www.instagram.com/villabelza_/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Villa Belza</a>, and on the south side you can see the Spanish coastline. In order to take it all in, go to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/etxola.bibi/?hl=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Etxola Bibi</a> early in the morning and have a black coffee (it only costs 1 euro from 8 am to 10 am) and follow up with an açaí or mango bowl for breakfast. And just a few metres down the street is the cutest restaurant we’ve ever visited: <a href="https://www.instagram.com/aiete_biarritz" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Aiete</a>. We learned that afternoon what an amazing meal can do to the soul. An authentic and modern little spot with an open kitchen, lovely ambience and tasteful décor. Not only were the staff the friendliest, but also the most accommodating we have come across in a long time. The chefs were happy to veganise everything we ordered: the best (avant-garde) patatas bravas we’ve ever had came with a kimchi sauce, and we loved the homemade naan bread with confit chicory, hummus and edible flowers. All paired with a fruity Spanish orange wine. It can’t be stressed enough - you must go! The fusion of Basque and French cultures is really evident in the cuisine and when walking through the streets of Biarritz. How to enjoy a vegan-friendly holiday in Biarritz, France

Lisbon is a historic city which can be traced back as far as the Neolithic period. Today, its extended boundary is home to around 3 million people and is bursting with culture and tradition. It is a truly global city and sits on the westernmost point of continental Europe. If you have never visited, V-Land highly recommends a trip, or three. The history, the stunning architecture, the glorious weather and the Portuguese vegan food combine to make it a must go to destination.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <h2>The Portuguese love for food</h2>We can all agree that any good trip starts and ends with fabulous fayre and Lisbon delivers. Consider yourself warned as the city is hilly, so take a good pair of walking shoes; you’ll need them and an energy boost to get around. Thankfully there are many eateries across the city to ensure you have a constant supply of the necessary food fuel. We could easily recommend all the vegan Lisbon restaurants we visited and suggest you check <a href="https://www.happycow.net/europe/portugal/lisbon/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Happy Cow</a> to see what appeals to you, but here are our top three picks. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/the_green_affair/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">The Green Affair</a> has 4 locations, all with a sophisticated art deco feel. We visited two of them and they did not disappoint. Their cuisine is international and the highlights for us were the gyoza dumplings, seitan steak and mushroom risotto. We were even compelled to write a note to the kitchen staff to thank them for the delicious dishes they had prepared for us.&nbsp; Nestled in the hilly streets to the west of the city is the small but perfectly formed <a href="https://www.instagram.com/legumisushi/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Legumi Sushi Vegan</a>. As far as vegan sushi goes, Lisbon or otherwise, they excel. Be sure to arrive hungry, as our recommendation is to order the all-you-can-eat option. The centrepiece of your meal will be the sushi boat: a wide selection of sushi and tempura presented on an impressive serving boat. Given the size of the restaurant, we have no idea where they have room to store them. In addition to this masterpiece, you order whatever you want on the menu. You will leave beyond satiated.&nbsp; Just a few blocks from the plaza, Praca do Comercio, is <a href="https://www.instagram.com/kongveganfood/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Kong - Food Made With Compassion</a>, so it is easy to combine when planning your day. They mostly serve typical Portuguese dishes which have been given a plant-based makeover. Their croquettes and ‘fried egg’ topped seitan steak have tons of table appeal. Make sure to leave room for dessert though.&nbsp; <h2>The sweet stuff</h2>If you are partial to a sugary treat, then there are two bakeries you must visit.&nbsp; <a href="https://www.instagram.com/vegannata.pt/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Vegan Nata</a> specialises in vegan custard tarts. The original <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pastel_de_nata" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Pastel de Nata</a> is native to Portugal and was first created by monks using eggs in the early 1800s. The Vegan Nata founders wanted to prove that vegan food can be tasty and they have succeeded. It makes for the perfect mid-morning snack with a side of coffee. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/scoopndough/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Scoop n Dough</a> does what it says on the tin. Given its prime central location, it is easy to find and get to. With a wide selection of mouthwatering ice cream and delectable doughnuts, one visit is not enough. We went several times and on the first occasion, we had to seek confirmation that everything was indeed vegan. Every visit after, we observed new customers arrive and ask the same question as they, also, could not believe it was possible. We could not get enough of the chocolate truffle doughnut or raspberry crumble ice cream. This means it is open late for all your cocktail and burger needs. They use Beyond patties and serve other snacks, including vegan hot dogs, hummus and guacamole. We had a very brief chat with the affable owner who expressed his passion for setting up and running an ethical business. This is an added bonus to the tasty food and drinks, so do support them if you are in the city. For a destination with a more unusual past, visit <a href="https://www.instagram.com/pensaoamor/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Pensao Amor</a>. This luxurious bar and hotel has many rooms with varied décor, all with a nod to its past. The building used to house a very popular brothel and it continues to attract people from far and wide to enjoy a different kind of pleasure late into the night. Go, drink and enjoy the entertainment or simply relax and soak up the ambience. <h2>What to do in Lisbon as a tourist</h2>If a big plaza is your thing, Lisbon will not disappoint. Facing the harbour in the heart of the city is the <a href="https://lisbonlisboaportugal.com/Baixa-Lisbon/praca-do-comercio-lisbon-portugal-guide.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Praca do Comercio</a>. Located where the Royal Palace used to be before the earthquake of 1755, this grand open space is surrounded by yellow buildings typical of Portugal. There are many fine viewpoints across Lisbon, but one of the best can be found at the <a href="https://lisbonlisboaportugal.com/Baixa-Lisbon/Elevador-Santa-Justa-Lisbon-elevator-lift-guide.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Santa Justa Elevator</a>. This magnificent wrought iron structure is officially part of the public transport system but is actually more of a tourist attraction. Find it in central Lisbon and access it from the ground floor or the hill, if you are feeling fit, as an adjoining bridge connects to it. When visiting, you must experience a ride on one of the many old-style trams - <a href="https://lisbonlisboaportugal.com/lisbon-transport/lisbon-tram-28.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Tram 28</a> is a popular choice. It weaves through the downtown before heading west, taking in many more of the city's highlights, including <a href="https://lisbonlisboaportugal.com/lisbon-sights/estrela-basilica-lisbon.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Basilica da Estrela</a>, <a href="https://stoantoniolisboa.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Church of Santo Antonio</a> and <a href="http://castelodesaojorge.pt/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Sao Jorge's Castle</a>.&nbsp; <h2>Escape from the city centre</h2>Like any respectable tourist city, Lisbon has a number of hop-on hop-off bus options. There are so many places to visit beyond the city centre and these buses make them super accessible. The added benefit is the audio guide as you ride, so you get to know a little more about the city’s rich history. First on your list should be the <a href="https://torrebelem.com/en/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Belem Tower</a>. This fortress, at the entrance to the Tagus River, was built in the 16th century to bolster the existing defences. The impressive architecture sits, resplendent and isolated, against a backdrop of sky and water. It is picture postcard stunning.&nbsp;&nbsp; Relatively close to the tower is the spectacular <a href="https://www.patrimoniocultural.gov.pt/pt/museus-e-monumentos/dgpc/m/mosteiro-dos-jeronimos/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Jeronimos Monastery</a>. Built in the 16th century, it is now classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the most popular attractions in Lisbon, so plan ahead and expect to queue. A little further afield, at nearly 30 km, is <a href="https://www.sintra-portugal.com/index.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Sintra</a>. Filled to the brim with majestic palaces, splendid villas, an abandoned castle and hidden gardens, it is worth the trek. Whether you're jetting off to an exotic location or enjoying paradise closer to home on a staycation our travel tips will help you to prepare for every eventuality. <h2>Surviving the airport&nbsp;</h2>Long waits in the airport leave little else to do but hunker down with a book and some snacks or find a bar or restaurant to pass the time. Restaurants, bars and coffee shops in the airport usually have vegan options but if you want to stock up, you can take solid food snacks through airport security in your hand baggage. You can take your favourite crisps, crackers, seeds, sweets, cookies and other solid food options through the airport and onto the plane. Planning a staycation? Whether you're travelling by car, rail or coach, be sure to pack plenty of snacks in case you don't find your vegan favourites at the bus, train or service stations. <h2>In-flight meals</h2>Check before you jet off on your vegan holiday whether your flight offers vegan meals. This app translates the definition of veganism into 100 different languages. Just show the app to the restaurant or bar staff to make sure that your requirements are understood. Keep a physical list of some useful phrases just in case your phone battery dies!&nbsp; <h2>Explore dining options</h2>If possible, try to look at local restaurant options and their menus ahead of time. It can be difficult to navigate restaurant menus when you see they are full of meat- and dairy-filled dishes, but if you're out exploring and your options are limited try not to be disheartened, and instead look for side dishes, salads and components of dishes that you can eat.&nbsp; More often than not restaurants are able to accommodate vegans and people with different lifestyles and dietary requirements if we just ask. Even if your dish is a vegan marinara pizza, order it loaded with your favourite vegetable toppings or instead of settling for chips, ask if you could have roasted or grilled vegetables and a salad with them.&nbsp; If you're staying in a holiday apartment or anywhere else with cooking facilities, be sure to do a small food shop so that you have snacks and a couple of quick and easy dishes you can prepare when needed.&nbsp; <h2>Pack the essentials&nbsp;</h2>Pack plenty of <a href="https://www.v-landuk.com/article/the-best-cruelty-free-vegan-suncream" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">vegan and cruelty-free sunscreen</a> and <a href="https://www.v-landuk.com/article/vegan-and-cruelty-free-makeup-for-your-travel-bag" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">toiletries</a>. Vegan travel tips: Plan ahead for your perfect vegan holiday

After spending a weekend in Edinburgh, we are ready to tell you all about the Edinburgh vegan scene and everything you should put on your itinerary for a short stay in Scotland’s capital city. From award-winning restaurants to culture and nightlife, we have you covered.&nbsp; <h2>Day one</h2>On our first day, we walked to Dean Village, a bucolic hub of charming 19th century houses and cobblestone pathways. We went for a scenic walk along the River Leith which runs straight through the small village, beneath the mews houses and stone bridges. Dean Village is straight out of a fairytale; it’s perfect for a relaxing stroll or a few photos between the picturesque walkthroughs.&nbsp;&nbsp; Next, we visited Raeburn Place in Stockbridge, a 15-minute walk away, to check out their second-hand and vintage shops. We went into about ten charity shops down a stretch of just 500 metres. Buying second-hand is a great way to boycott fast fashion whilst still enjoying clothes.&nbsp; For lunch, we went further into the city centre, across St Andrew Square, to one of the most popular vegan cafés in Edinburgh, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/holycowedinburgh/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Holy Cow</a>. Recommended by a friend who happens to be a Scottish local, Holy Cow exceeded our expectations. Their menu offered a great variety of sandwiches and burgers. We shared a vegan Reuben sandwich and a delicious New York-style strawberry cheesecake. The Reuben sandwich was a tangy delight packed with many pickled vegetables and heavily spiced layers of seitan pastrami. The mustard, pickles, mature cheese and sauerkraut were in thick slices of their soft homemade sourdough bread. The vegan cheesecake was baked to a crumbly brown finish, but still so soft and creamy on the inside. The strawberries on top were cooked down into a fine syrup that sat on top of a generous layer of their cashew-based ‘cream cheese.’ All of their cakes are vegan, and mostly gluten-free. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1689020701/Image_1_56_pic_2_e1b1c6a593.png" alt="Vegan Reuben sandwich on a white plate with a side of salad in Holy Cow Edinburgh"><a href="https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid02DczkSNkWEtSxPjFkiZF9NERskCx8rHPPeZpdeBJn1pgh6TNpi3ymsXWCuZEya5C1l&amp;id=100036617145990" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Holy Cow</a> In the afternoon, we went to the <a href="https://www.rbge.org.uk/?gclid=CjwKCAjwm4ukBhAuEiwA0zQxk2MC7QCxYA6itoIDP6Q7KQzTfx7FxAD44WCcrWY-CRpm5WW_q4x5cxoCf1MQAvD_BwE" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh</a>. As plant enthusiasts, we were keen to stroll around the grounds and soak up some sunshine. The conservationists house plant collections from across the globe, including many endangered species, such as the Chinese Paperbark Maple, which has gorgeous copper bark that unravels to look almost like a paper scroll. There was no pressure to know what you were looking at, or to see everything. After an hour, we returned to our hotel to relax.&nbsp; The first restaurant we went to in Edinburgh was <a href="https://instagram.com/hendersonseatbetter?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Hendersons</a>. We knew we had to try vegan haggis in Scotland, and we needed a reputable restaurant. Hendersons opened its doors in 1962 and is considered <a href="https://www.hendersonsrestaurant.com/about-hendersons" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">the UK’s longest-running</a> vegetarian restaurant. After closing in 2020 due to the pandemic, they reopened in a new location but under the same name Henderson, thanks to their grandson, Barrie Henderson. They are passionate about organic, locally sourced ingredients and everything they cook is seasonal.&nbsp; We first ordered the broccoli salad, but do not be fooled by its humble title, the salad incorporated finely chopped cavolo nero, orange segments, cranberries, toasted hazelnuts, and a hazelnut and orange dressing. The sturdy, green vegetables were made tender and soft by the citrus in the dressing and slices of tart orange.&nbsp; We also enjoyed the banana blossom pakora in ‘sweet tattie chapati’ with coconut raita. This dish was an Asian and European fusion of chapati made from sweet potato, and it worked so well. The hardiness of the sweet potato meant the chapati resembled more of a shell than a flatbread - which was perfect to hold the flaky pakora and yoghurt-based sauce. The pakora was crispy and so juicy once we bit into the flesh of the banana blossom.&nbsp; The vegan haggis was served with root mash, whisky and tarragon cream, and caramelised red onions. It’s easy to see why locals have fallen for this vegan substitute of the well-loved classic, haggis neeps and tatties. Henderson’s haggis was shaped like a classic pie made with layers of lentils and root vegetables, smothered in a boozy, rich cream.&nbsp; After what we believe was the best vegetarian restaurant in Edinburgh for a traditional Scottish dish, we headed to the <a href="https://www.brassmonkeyedinburgh.co.uk/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Brass Monkey</a> on Drummond Street for a few drinks. The Brass Monkey is a kooky bar with a room full of mismatched sofas that run wall-to-wall. People were lying down, propped up, sipping their cocktails, whilst we gingerly sat on the edge of a ginormous six-person sofa! The décor was playful with band posters and film memorabilia plastered everywhere. If you like something different and fun, this bar is for you.&nbsp; <h2>Day two</h2>On our second day, we decided to take in the panoramic view of Edinburgh from the top of Colton Hill. The walk itself was only five minutes from top to bottom, and it’s a great option if you’re not feeling up to climbing Arthur’s Seat. We then made our way down the Royal Mile, a tourist hotspot of souvenir shops, whisky cellars and, of course, Edinburgh Castle at the very top.&nbsp;&nbsp; We slipped down a side street and found <a href="https://instagram.com/antojitostruck?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Antojitos</a>, vegan Mexican street food, served inside a quirky pub called <a href="https://instagram.com/thedoghouseedinburgh?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">The Dog House</a>. Inside, every single wall was either bricked, full of illustrations or hung with curiosities such as shoes, mirrors and teddy bears! We were surprised by how much their plant-based menu offered: tacos, quesadillas, loaded vegan nachos, and even grilled elote. You haven’t taken in the Edinburgh vegan scene until you’ve tried Antojitos’ southern fried pineapple tacos: charred pineapple with chimichurri, grilled peppers, onions and chipotle mayo. We also had their shredded ‘chicken’, aka pea protein, tacos with melted mozzarella ‘sheese’, guacamole and pickled onions. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1689020850/Image_2_5_pic_3_b9a582d6b1.png" alt="Antojitos’ southern fried pineapple tacos"><a href="https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid0DFoyeHEPa1uJ2Tpg6DmGTeCfXc776BaEF2YtyhAn1dKj8DPkrZevp3jkFmXRFUEWl&amp;id=100035244853724" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Antojitos</a> We spent most of our second day in the <a href="https://www.nationalgalleries.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">National Galleries of Scotland</a>: Modern One and Modern Two. Both galleries showcased contemporary art from the 1900s to the present day. We particularly enjoyed the immersive exhibition of <a href="https://www.nationalgalleries.org/art-and-artists/features/alberta-whittle-solo-exhibition-scottish-national-gallery-modern-art-2023" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Alberta Whittle</a>, a Barbadian-Scottish artist who uses mixed media such as collage and film to discuss Scotland’s historical involvement in white supremacy. Her work celebrates her Barbadian heritage and makes a hopeful plea for a future of kindness and community.&nbsp; Later in the evening, we went to <a href="https://instagram.com/thejazzbar?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">The Jazz Bar</a>, a multi-genre basement space which hosts live jazz and acoustic music. The band we saw played modern jazz with an influence of disco. The saxophonist and lead guitarist would often go off script and jam out to the tail end of each song. The Jazz Bar is a must if you’re looking for an intimate and relaxed venue that plays live music from Scottish artists.&nbsp; For dinner we tried possibly one of the best vegan restaurants in Edinburgh, <a href="https://instagram.com/soralellaedinburgh?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Sora Lella</a>. Owned by a small family from Rome, Sora Lella is Edinburgh’s first entirely vegan, Roman restaurant. Multi-award-winning Sora Lella proudly holds the title of ‘best chef’ for the 2021 <a href="https://scottishitalianawards.co.uk/2021-finalists/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Scottish Italian awards</a>. Their plant-based menu pays homage to Italian classics such as Gnocchi Alla Sorrentina, Bucatini Cacio e Pepe, and the best tiramisu we have ever tasted. It was hard to choose just a few dishes from their enormous menu, with over 10 different vegan pizzas, all of which could be made into a calzone, and over 15 different vegan pasta dishes.&nbsp; For starters, we opted for the pizza dumplings with spicy arrabiata sauce and fried bolognese rice balls, filled with mozzarella, not the most authentic, but so delicious! Sora Lella’s take on arancini was fun and indulgent. The ingenuity and creativity of their starters definitely trumped our - also very tasty - mains. The pizza balls were fresh and doughy, not to mention smothered in a rich tomato sauce and vegan parmesan. Our ‘meat feast’ pizzas were baked until deep brown and had red onion, and mock ham, chicken, pepperoni and sausage. Edinburgh vegan guide: Where to eat and what to see in a weekend

While both football and The Beatles are integral to the DNA of Liverpool, there is so much more to discover in this vibrant city. The café is 100% plant-based and can be found in the heart of the city. For breakfast, they have the standard full English or pancakes, which are beyond satisfying. However, there are many ‘egg’-based items to choose from, including veggs royale, veggs benny or a fried vegg atop a hash stack. Returning to sample as many dishes as possible is almost inevitable. For a more bohemian setting, the institution that is <a href="https://instagram.com/theeggcafe?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">The Egg Café</a> is a popular choice for visitors and locals alike. It has been around so long it was a pioneer in making vegan and vegetarian food more accessible in the city of Liverpool. While not completely vegan, it does do a mean full English, which includes tea, coffee or juice. Bonus consideration is the vegan nut roast they do on a Sunday, so try not to miss out on this British staple. Now that you are fully loaded for the day, what else is there to do in Liverpool? <h2>Some of Liverpool’s top historic attractions</h2>With a string of accolades and a 4.8 rating on Google, the <a href="https://rlb360.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Royal Liver Buildings Tour</a> is one you should book in advance. Learn about the building, its varied residents and its iconic Liver Birds, perched atop its towers. With a 360-degree observation balcony, you will have a (liver) bird’s eye view of the city. <a href="http://www.williamsontunnels.co.uk/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Williamson Tunnels</a> is a heritage centre where you can visit part of the extensive tunnels and vaults built in the early 1800s by the philanthropist <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Williamson_(philanthropist)" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Joseph Williamson</a>. Learn who he was but not necessarily why he built this underground network. It remains a mystery to this day.&nbsp;&nbsp;If you yearn to live the song first performed by Gerry &amp; the Pacemakers in 1964, you are still able to <a href="https://www.songfacts.com/facts/gerry-the-pacemakers/ferry-cross-the-mersey" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Ferry Across the Mersey</a>. Run by Mersey Ferries this 50-minute <a href="https://www.merseyferries.co.uk/our-cruises/river-explorer-cruise/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">river explorer cruise</a> will take you to the Wirral and back to the Pier Head. As you sail away, the splendour of the city skyline will reveal itself while you learn about its rich past and present. The <a href="https://albertdock.com/history/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Albert Dock</a> is a prominent part of that skyline and was integral to global trade in the 19th century. This sprawling retail complex has something for everyone. Expect your everyday high street stores as well as brands that are a little more demanding on the wallet or purse. If sustainability is front of mind when shopping, then the <a href="https://redbrickmarkets.co.uk/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Red Brick Market</a> is for you. Comprising of more than 50 small independent traders, it is bursting with unique pre-loved vintage clothes and home accessories. Next to it, you will find the <a href="https://www.balticmarket.co.uk/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Baltic Market</a> with numerous and varied street food vendors. While none, at present, are exclusively vegan, there are lots of plant-based options if you wish to also grab a bite to eat while there.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2> </h2><h2>Get out for an evening meal</h2>You should have already started your day at a couple of the best vegan restaurants in Liverpool but fear not, there are more to choose from. With a punk rock vibe, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/guacnrollkitchen/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Guac 'n' Roll</a> does the best burgers one can sink their teeth into. Given the saturation of burgers on the vegan food scene, we do not make this claim lightly. With a new permanent home planned in the Fabric District you will be able to enjoy their art display and live music in addition to their extensive menu. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1688492635/Image_2_7_485a96fd99.png" alt="Vegan burger in a brioche bun with toppings and filings">Guac 'n' Roll <a href="https://www.v-landuk.com/article/enter-the-woo-tan-award-winning-vegan-chinese-food-in-liverpool-1" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Woo Tan Scran</a> and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/downthehatchliv/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Down The Hatch</a> are sister businesses that share the same kitchen on Duke Street. They are both worthy of a visit.&nbsp; Woo Tan Scran offers up award-winning plant-based Chinese chippy food. When they made the difficult decision to close their original location, their many fans breathed a sigh of relief when they quickly announced their return. Our recommendation is their salt and pepper box and a side of curry or gravy. This box is filled to the brim with many of their menu items, so is ideal for sharing.&nbsp; Down the Hatch isn’t fully vegan, so watch out for those dairy items. The positive is that all food is served plant-based unless requested otherwise. With loaded fries, burgers, home-cooked curries and more, you are spoilt for choice. They offer up a decent cocktail menu too. What’s not to love?<h2> </h2><h2>Hitting the bars and clubs</h2>Liverpool city centre is bursting with a myriad of pubs and clubs, so simply get out and explore. However, Matthew Street is probably one of the best areas for nightlife. It is actually home to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/cavernliverpool/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">The Cavern Club</a>, where The Beatles played many times. If you are a fan of their music it is definitely worth a drink or two there.&nbsp; For something a little different… hidden behind an inconspicuous door on Duke Steet is <a href="https://www.instagram.com/theoraclebar/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">The Oracle</a> (you can’t book so you never know how busy it will be, but any wait is worth it). Once you are let inside you are led through a long corridor and shown to a table in one of several rooms. There you will sit in this Victorian-styled cocktail bar as magicians stop by to entertain. Making the most of Liverpool as a vegan tourist


It is that time of year again. We are all enjoying the first rays of sun, and we at V-Land UK managed to get ahead of the summer tourists and fly to Palma de Mallorca to help you navigate the island and everything it offers.&nbsp; You’ll get to savour the vegan food Mallorca has to offer. From juicy tomatoes to meaty olives and vegan tapas, the island will captivate you! <h2 class="ql-align-justify">First things first, breakfast</h2>While Mallorca’s traditional cuisine is not the most vegan-friendly, there is undoubtedly the fail-safe you can always rely on: pa amb oli (which translates to “bread with oil”). Its consumption was first linked to peasants and farmers, who would have to improvise simple foods they could prepare easily when working in the fields. While it originally used to be based on bread and oil, it currently consists of slices of bread, with tomato rubbed over, a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of salt. While simple, it is delicious and filling, and you’ll find it at any local bar you stop at.&nbsp; If you want a more filling breakfast, we recommend <a href="https://www.instagram.com/mamacarmenpalma/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Mama Carmen</a>’s menu of healthy dishes, baked goods, and freshly squeezed juices or try out <a href="https://www.instagram.com/lafincamallorca_/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">La Finca</a>’s offering, both in Palma. <h2 class="ql-align-justify">A midday coffee</h2>As you may know, Spaniards tend to have their lunch late, towards 2 pm or 3 pm, which is why it’s typical to have a short break at midday to have a little café. Whether you are having a breather to rest your feet after lots of sightseeing or jumping from one Zoom call to another, we recommend checking out <a href="https://www.instagram.com/caferiutort/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Café Riutort</a> for some specialty coffee goodness or the guys of <a href="https://www.instagram.com/nano.coffeelab/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Nan</a><a href="https://www.instagram.com/nano.coffeelab/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">ø Coffee Lab</a>, who also serve delicious vegan pastries. <h2 class="ql-align-justify">A local market for some shopping</h2>If there is one thing that is not missing on the island, it’s fresh produce. If you are staying over for a few days and would like to cook yourself, we recommend you shop at the local markets. They are generally held at the town’s main square, like the ones in Sóller or Pollensa, and you’ll find a wide assortment of fruits, vegetables and preserved foods such as olives or homemade jams. If you find yourself in Palma, you can’t miss El Mercat de l’Olivar, a traditional market which holds a vegan butcher’s stand called <a href="https://www.instagram.com/pasen_y_vegan.palma/?utm_medium=copy_link&amp;hl=es" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Pasen&amp;Vegan</a>. They offer vegan cheeses, vegan meats and lots more product substitutes, so we really encourage you to visit them if you’d like to support a local Mallorcan vegan business. <h2>A vegan lunch&nbsp;</h2>A town with as many tourists as Palma offers many gastronomic options, and finding vegan food is not hard. However, there are two unmissable spots if you want to have the whole Mallorca vegan experience. Firstly, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/plaernatural/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Plaer Natural</a>, a vegetarian restaurant in the heart of the city offers two to three-dish daily menus for 12 or 16 euros (depending on the menu you choose). Dessert or coffee is always included too! You can eat inside or outdoors under their parasols, so it’s a great spot if you want to catch some vitamin D. On the other hand, we have <a href="https://www.instagram.com/temple_natura/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Temple Natura</a>, another vegetarian restaurant that has been running for over 15 years - isn’t that a testament of how good they are?&nbsp;&nbsp; <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1686930531/Image_1_22_ab1a1ebd0e.png" alt="Terrace with tables and chairs with luscious plants ">Temple Natura <h2>And out with a bang</h2>At the end of the day it is only natural to want to fill your belly with some vegan tapas. Go to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/bar__espanya/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Bar España</a>, a traditional bar where you’ll eat the most mouth-watering tapas you’ve ever tried. Their menu points out the vegetarian and vegan options, but we recommend double-checking the allergen information too, since some incongruences may exist. If it were up to us, we’d order the vegan coca, the vegan tumbet, the Padrón peppers and the always-popular patatas bravas all over again! They have two different city locations, so you have no excuse not to visit. The inside scoop on Palma de Mallorca


France may famously lure foodies from around the globe, but for travellers like us in search of a vegan holiday, navigating the land of foie gras and Camembert can be a tricky prospect. Even in cosmopolitan cities like Paris, declaring “Je suis végétalienne” (I am vegan) is likely to be met with a bewildered stare. Venture into rural France and vegan travel may seem nothing short of impossible.&nbsp;&nbsp; In the past few years, however, we’ve noticed a new wave of businesses bringing plant-based living to every corner of l'hexagone - including the charming Charente region of France, where we recently spent a week at <a href="https://www.lacourdehusson.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">La Cour de Husson</a>, a stylish vegan-friendly villa hosted by British expats <a href="https://www.instagram.com/veganfrenchlife/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Nick and Jen Thompson</a>. We first spotted the couple on <a href="https://www.channel4.com/programmes/a-new-life-in-the-sun/on-demand/72387-027" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">A New Life in the Sun (Series 8)</a>, watching with more than a little FOMO as they traded Southeast London for Southwest France and began converting an ancient rural hamlet into self-catering holiday cottages (or “gîtes”) that aligned with their vegan principles.&nbsp; After learning that their first luxury gîte, gardens and pool had opened for business, we booked a trip and made La Cour de Husson our base as we explored the region, from its organic vineyards in Cognac to the vibrant hilltop city of Angoulême. <h2>The vibe at La Cour de Husson</h2>As much as we may say we want to escape city life when we travel, if we’re honest, we also really love our mod cons - a fact that made La Cour de Husson the perfect fit for our week-long escape. While the hamlet’s rustic stone exterior is pure French-country charm, as we stepped inside our cottage, we found a space as well-appointed as any high-end hotel, with a hygge balance that made it feel equal parts homey and stylish.&nbsp; <h2>Cook and dine</h2>One of the main reasons to book a self-catering holiday, of course, is the chance to cook, and our gîte at La Cour de Husson seemed tailor-made for not just cooking but entertaining.&nbsp; The gorgeous kitchen was stocked with every pot, pan, and utensil we could possibly need, letting us finally tick a few <a href="https://annajones.co.uk/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Anna Jones</a> vegan recipes we’d been wanting to try off our list. We packed our extra-large fridge with fruits and veggies from a veg box we’d pre-ordered via our hosts from<a href="https://puybonnet.fr/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);"> La Ferme de Puybonnet</a>, an organic farm just over the road, along with vegan meats and cheeses we picked up at a nearby supermarché.&nbsp; To our delight, we also discovered little luxuries like a dishwasher as well as an espresso maker stocked with compostable pink pods from the couple’s favourite London coffee shop, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/grind/?hl=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Grind</a>. Our first night, as we sat around the dining room’s candle-lit table and tucked into the pine &amp; crane noodles we’d just whipped up, we couldn’t help but ask ourselves, why exactly is it that we’re still living in the city? Other evenings, we put on a 12-inch on the record player and grilled vegan burgers on our private stone-lined patio, and ate alfresco as the sun set, sipping pineau des charente cocktails, a delicious aperitif almost unheard of outside the region.&nbsp; <h2>Slumber and soak</h2>Although there were only two of us, the three-bedroom, two-bath gîte easily could have accommodated six. We chose a room with soaring beamed ceilings and sunflower-field views. A large roll-top tub stocked with luxurious vegan toiletries encouraged before-bed soaks, while supersoft organic bedding and incredibly comfy mattresses made it far too easy to designate every morning a lazy Sunday. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1686425018/Image_1_2_9e27aad184.png" alt="Outdoor wooden dining table and chairs on gravel surrounded by lights and trees">La Cour de Husson <h2>What about the wifi?</h2>While we would have preferred to forget we had a job at all while on holiday, a mini work emergency forced us to put the gîte’s wifi to the test, and it proved every bit as fast and reliable as in our London flat.&nbsp;&nbsp; <h2>The great outdoors</h2>Countryside views stretch for miles in every direction at La Cour de Husson, and by the end of the week, we’d enjoyed them from every corner of the property, as well as jaunts to experience outdoor adventures nearby.&nbsp; A short walk from our gîte’s back door led us through a wildflower-filled meadow to our private Mediterranean pool, where we lazed on loungers and soaked up the sun. Some afternoons we simply took in the changing skies from one of the hammocks dotted around the landscape and sought out the couple’s sweet dog Betty and friendly cats, Moo Moo and Peepo, for some furry companionship.&nbsp; Feeling adventurous one morning, we headed to the nearby town of Ruffec, where we spent a delightful couple hours paddling along the bubbling river Charente on a kayak adventure arranged for us by our hosts. <h2>The vegan breakfasts</h2>This is a B&amp;B after all, and each week-long stay at La Cour de Husson comes with two complimentary vegan breakfasts. We chose to have ours on the first and final morning of our stay - and they became one of the highlights of our time there. Our hosts served us gorgeous spreads that included locally-sourced house-made masala beans on toast, homemade cinnamon buns, vegan yoghurt topped with yummy homemade granola and fruit compote, and hands-down the best vegan scramble we’ve had. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1686425015/Image_2_3992b35273.png" alt="Variety of vegan breakfast items including toast with avocado, coffee, orange juice, fruit compotes and pastries">La Cour de Husson <h2>4 regional must-sees:&nbsp;</h2>Although we could happily have stayed on the grounds of La Cour de Husson for our entire stay, our lovely hosts helped us craft an itinerary of mini road trips that included some of their favourite highlights and vegan-friendly haunts in the area. Tusson: Just a three-minute drive (or 35-minute walk) from La Cour de Husson brought us this delightful little village, home to everything from weekend brocantes to a wonderful little cake shop called <a href="https://www.instagram.com/gateauxtusson/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Gâteaux</a>, which offers at least one vegan cake daily, as well as a selection of non-dairy milk for teas and flat whites.&nbsp; Verteuil-sur-Charente: A turreted castle straight out of a fairytale pulled us back to this small village (a 15-minute drive from our gîte) several times during our stay. We lunched on classic French fare veganised on request at <a href="https://www.instagram.com/cafe_portebleue/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Cafe Portebleu</a> (a bargain at €16 for a 3-course meal with a glass of wine) and spent a few lovely hours sipping Aperol Spritzes riverside at <a href="https://www.instagram.com/la_senechalerie_verteuil_/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">La Sénéchalerie</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp; Angoulême: The hilltop city’s quirky charm made it the backdrop for Wes Anderson’s film <a href="https://www.instagram.com/frenchdispatch/?hl=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">The French Dispatch</a>. During an afternoon here, we stocked up on organic veggies at its famous covered market, <a href="https://www.angouleme-tourisme.com/en/patrimoine-culturel/les-halles/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Les Halles</a>, before enjoying lunch at <a href="https://www.instagram.com/gardenangouleme/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Garden</a>, a plant-based cafe that serves everything from gorgeous vegan bowls to what are possibly the most delicious chocolate chip cookies in the region. Cognac: A 45-minute drive through the rolling hills of Cognac brought us to the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/cognacpasquet/?hl=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">JLP Cognac Pasquet</a> vineyard, where our hosts had pre-arranged a delightful tour of the distillery and private tasting of the organic cognac maker’s naturally vegan brandy and amazing raspberry-flavoured Marie Framboise Pineau des Charente. On our last morning at La Cour de Husson, we enjoyed a gorgeous vegan breakfast prepared by our lovely hosts, indulged in one last dip in the pool and reluctantly headed to the airport in nearby Poitiers, spending the car ride planning a return visit to this idyllic holiday house that already felt like a second home. Longing for a luxurious vegan holiday? Head to La Cour de Husson

Here at V-Land UK we are constantly searching high and low to find you the best places to travel to, and on this occasion we have focused on the high, visiting this amazing little vegan B&amp;B in the Scottish Highlands. <h2>Welcome</h2><a href="https://instagram.com/greenstonelodge?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Greenstone Lodge</a> sits in the Bridge of Orchy in Argyll and Bute, and is on the famous 96 mile long hiking path of the West Highland Way. Many people arrive at this Highland B&amp;B on foot after a long day's walk and are lucky enough to be greeted with a slice of delicious homemade vegan cake - all of the food provided is fully vegan, they even request non-vegan products to not be brought on site. We travelled to Greenstone Lodge by car, with a parking space provided, and were very relieved to discover we still got the cake!&nbsp;<h2>Discovering the local area</h2>Once you’re loaded up on cake, it’s a good time to explore the stunning scenery on your doorstep. As you leave the front door you will immediately find yourself on the West Highland Way with possibilities of going in either direction. If you go right, over the Bridge that gives the village its name, you keep travelling uphill for around a mile and a half and are rewarded with the breath-taking sight of the surrounding Munros and the views down to Loch Tulla, you can then descend into nearby Inveroran and walk back past the loch and along the river Orchy. For the even more adventurous you can head left and within 3 minutes be at the foot of Beinn Dorain, a Munro measuring a height of 1076m, only 9 metres shy of Mount Snowdon. <h2>Dining at Greenstone Lodge</h2>Once you have built up your appetite it’s a perfect time to head back to the room, the rooms are quirky, stylish and cosy and come complete with their own personal dining area. We had chosen to eat there that evening, and it’s tricky not to immediately turn your attention to the menu board in the hallway to start trying to choose which dish to go for. Fortunately whilst we were deciding we were able to nibble on the homemade Scottish shortbread and slurp the Scottish roasted coffee provided in the room. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1684752013/Image_1_45_pic_2_9f3150b629.png" alt="Interior of a cosy B&amp;B room with a bed with pillows, wooden table and chairs, warm lighting and green walls">Greenstone Lodge The menu is always changing and offers plant-based takes on Scottish classics, such as haggis and white pudding bon bons, with whisky sauce and a raspberry chilli chutney, and also dishes from further afield such as the smoked tofu saganaki with lemon roast potatoes and a cucumber mint salad. You can choose either a two course meal at £25 per person, or three courses at £30. The dinners are hearty, wonderfully presented and taste marvellous: prepared by B&amp;B co-owner Chris, who was a head chef before opening Greenstone Lodge with Hayley. Almost every element of the food at Greenstone Lodge is homemade by the pair, which makes your stay at this cosy vegan B&amp;B even more of a unique experience.&nbsp;<h2>Breakfasts</h2>After a great night’s sleep you’ll need a solid breakfast to fuel your adventures, and the offerings won’t disappoint, with the option of going for the full Scottish: including haggis, Lorne sausage, and potato scone or the continental: featuring cinnamon buns, granola, fruits and plant-based charcuterie and cheese. There is also a constantly changing special, which whilst we were there was ‘Lorne Order’, two homemade Lorne sausage patties with melted cheese and brown sauce in a sourdough bun, which was as mouth-watering as it sounds. There is even a breakfast baguette available to take away for anyone who either wants to leave very early or who doesn’t do breakfast. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1684752209/Image_2_4_pic_3_4d4cb04c0d.png" alt="Vegan breakfast from Greenstone Lodge consisting of granola, apple, cherries, tomatoes, brioche and bread on a wooden board">Greenstone Lodge The food doesn’t necessarily need to stop at breakfast though, and for £15 you can order a packed lunch including even more homemade plant-based goodies such as pie, tart or calzone and a very generously sized slab of flapjack.&nbsp;<h2>Highland adventures</h2>Once your bellies are full and you head outside you’ll no doubt agree with us that The Bridge of Orchy is the perfect place to base yourself to explore this beautiful part of the world. Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak towering 1345m into the sky, is just 40 miles away, the same distance as Oban where you can catch a boat to various Scottish Islands or visit a whisky distillery. Just 12 miles away is the Glencoe Mountain Ski Resort, which is Scotland’s oldest, where you can ski, snowboard and sledge in the winter and mountain bike or go tubing in the summer. If you’re travelling without a car you can still easily get around as there’s a train station in the village with direct trains to Glasgow, Fort William, and Oban, or alternatively a bus which picks up and drops off at many of the tourist destinations. Although we were there in April and had fantastic weather, from previous experience Autumn is our favourite season to visit the Highlands with the seasonal foliage, and the rooms would feel cosier. Even if you get caught in a downpour, which can happen in this part of the world, rest assured that waiting for you back at your B&amp;B is your own personal outdoor clothes drying cabinet and some more of that amazing plant-based food. Do your research; there are many! <h2>Day three</h2>On day three, if you're not too full after breakfast, we'd suggest checking out <a href="https://instagram.com/grubmcr?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Grub</a> a 15-20 minute walk from the city centre and not far from the Arena: a street food venue which holds <a href="https://www.grubmcr.com/plantpoweredsundays" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Plant Powered Sundays</a> each week with all-vegan food vendors (which is exactly how we discovered some of the best vegan food in Manchester!). Whether you decide to visit one of the city's theatres, take in some live music at a music venue large or small or head to a bar or club you'll never be without a place to go! We find most bars in the city are helpful when asked for help selecting vegan drinks and many bars have vegan small plates and bar snacks. Best way to spend 72 hours as a vegan in Manchester


The German capital, known worldwide for its interesting history and extraordinary nightlife is definitely a place everyone should visit at least once. Discover the must-dos when exploring as a vegan in Berlin.&nbsp; Since the reunification in 1990 the city has attracted free spirited people from all over the world and is home to many musicians, DJs and artists. Therefore, it's no surprise that many of Berlin's inhabitants are living a kind of alternative lifestyle, which is the reason for the huge vegan community. So we at V-Land travelled to experience first-hand what it’s like to be vegan in Berlin and to give you some recommendations that you should definitely check out upon your next visit. While thinking of visiting a vegan café for breakfast, we fortunately stumbled over a place called <a href="https://www.instagram.com/brammibalsdonuts/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Brammibal's Donuts</a>: All their products are 100% plant-based and you'll find their stores all over Berlin. The taste and texture of their donuts is astonishing - we couldn't believe they were vegan!&nbsp; After this we took a little digestive stroll over the RAW area. An old industrial complex with plenty of abandoned buildings, that got converted over the last years into bars, clubs,&nbsp;skateparks, bouldering halls and other venues to spend some time, whatever the weather. You'll also find some restaurants and cafés here.&nbsp; Check out <a href="https://emmapea.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Emma Pea</a>, which we think is one of best vegan restaurants in Berlin with a good variety of freshly prepared, delicious meals. Another must-do in Berlin is obviously having a döner kebab. While a couple of years ago you needed to find a vegan kebab shop to get the plant-based version, nowadays every kebab shop in Berlin offers a seitan kebab for a similar price as the non-vegan version. But our personal favourite kebab was not found in a kebab shop, but in a burger restaurant, called&nbsp;<a href="https://instagram.com/vedang.official?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Vedang</a>. We tried a couple of their delicious burgers and when their staff recommended the kebab wrap on their menu, we luckily accepted - it’d be tricky to distinguish it from the real deal. Go check them out, they also have other branches all over Germany. For dinner we were happy to queue to get a table, as we definitely wanted to try the food at the infamous <a href="https://www.instagram.com/1990veganliving/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">1990 Vegan Living</a>, but were obviously not the only ones with this idea. Recommended by people like Gaz Oakley our expectations were high but got fulfilled completely: A huge choice of different, mouth-watering Vietnamese tapas, best to share with your friend or partner, blew our mind completely!&nbsp; <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1683028141/Image_8687e68602.png" alt="Multiple bowls of colourful Vietnamese tapas from 1990 Vegan Living restaurant in Berlin"><a href="https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid02VjMRbUTYNncfyTEsAgQB6LhSYwBfjHefbUtjazir2oi64mmMwmPgMcYshqhpJQcml&amp;id=100063631686902" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">1990 Vegan Living</a> To finish the day, we decided to get some drinks and found, just around the corner, the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/EkoBarBerlin/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Ekō Bar</a>. A cosy venue, set up in retro style like an 80s living room, which is typical for Berlin. A comprehensive offer of vegan long drinks and cocktails will definitely include something to satiate your thirst. We can recommend the whisky sour. With egg white? Must-dos when spending 24 hours as a vegan in Berlin

When you think of vegan travel options, Dubai is not a destination that immediately springs to mind. However, with one of the world’s fastest growing economies and a varied and expanding international community, Dubai is not short of vegan restaurants to choose from. V-Land recently had the opportunity to visit for a week so we were able to explore the city and discover some of the vegan spots and tourist attractions it has to offer. <h2>What to do in Dubai for a week</h2>Dubai dates back to the 18th century but the last 30 years has seen its biggest growth. It is now a modern bustling city with something for everyone. One of the newest attractions is the <a href="https://museumofthefuture.ae/en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Museum of the Future</a>. The building itself is simply stunning, while the exhibition presents a myriad of futures and takes visitors on a journey to the 2070s. It is proving extremely popular though, so be sure to book in advance.&nbsp; If tall buildings are your thing, then Dubai has you covered. It is home to the tallest building in the world - the <a href="https://www.burjkhalifa.ae/en/the-tower/facts-figures/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Burj Khalifa</a>. There are a number of different floors you can ascend to and you choose based on your budget and the experience you want. Regardless of how high you go, all offer an unforgettable view of the city. Our tip is to book for an early slot to avoid crowds and queuing. The temperature can get pretty brutal in the summer, but if you time your visit well, you’ll want to spend some time at the beach. The most popular public beach is <a href="https://www.visitdubai.com/en/places-to-visit/kite-beach" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Kite Beach</a> where you can relax and simply soak up the soul-nourishing benefits of a little sun, sea and sand. If you are feeling a little more adventurous, you can also try watersports like kitesurfing and paddleboarding. Some other noteworthy activities to add to your list include the slip and slide of the <a href="https://www.atlantis.com/dubai/atlantis-aquaventure/aquaventure-waterpark" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Atlantis Waterpark</a>, the breathtaking <a href="https://www.thedubaiframe.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Dubai Frame</a> and, for an adrenaline hit, desert dune bashing in a buggy. Many tours offer buggy experiences, but be careful not to book one that combines with a camel ride. Buggies are made to be ridden. Camels, not so much, so it’s disappointing this occurs at all. <h2>Dubai’s vegan restaurants</h2>Many restaurants across Dubai have vegan options and there are quite a few 100% vegan delivery services to be found. A quick browse on <a href="https://www.happycow.net/asia/united_arab_emirates/dubai/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Happy Cow</a> will show how extensive plant-based fayre is across the city. Despite all these possibilities, we mostly ate at the dine-in vegan restaurants. As it turns out, all our favourites are also top-rated on Happy Cow. If one needs validation, this is surely it.&nbsp;&nbsp; Following a day on Kite Beach we headed to the nearby <a href="https://www.instagram.com/justveganjumeirah/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Just Vegan Jumeirah</a>. They serve a mix of European and Arabic dishes, specialising in veganised popular dishes that usually contain meat. This means you can expect the likes of burgers, pizzas, shawarma and mac ‘n’ cheese. Their menu is extensive and despite the many healthier options we opted for the nachos and burgers - the ‘Oops Mushroom’ and ‘New York Double Cheese’. Sometimes you just need a delicious dirty vegan burger and they did not disappoint. We left full to bursting and content with the choices we made. Our next stop was <a href="https://www.instagram.com/vagaeadubai/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Vagaea</a>. The founder is a graduate from a design school, which explains the artistic décor of graffitied sculptures, dried flowers and thick yarned curtains. The Brazilian-inspired menu contains ingredients that are grown and sourced sustainably. There was so much to choose from that it was hard to decide, so we gravitated to the more traditional Brazilian dishes. To start, we tried the coxinha, which were stuffed with jackfruit and fried to perfection. Next was a moqueca, which substituted the fish with heart of palm. Yum. And to conclude, we just had enough room for their prestigio cake, which was filled with coconut and homemade condensed almond milk. In close proximity, is <a href="https://www.instagram.com/planetterradubai/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Planet Terra</a>. This organic café serves artisanal, handcrafted and innovative plant-based delights. With an outdoor terrace on the bank of a tranquil waterway, it is the perfect setting to decompress and enjoy some shaded outside space. Open from early morning to late at night, their menu changes throughout the day. Arrive early enough and you can opt for an acai bowl, French toast or pancakes for breakfast. We booked for dinner and were drawn to the buckwheat and mushroom croquettes, hazelnut béchamel smothered lasagna and the chocolate mousse dome. This place is highly recommended. On our final day exploring as a vegan in Dubai, we visited a self-described hidden gem and it’s true. The café, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/sevatable/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Seva Table</a>, is linked to a wellness centre, so you can combine it with a yoga or meditation session if you wish. The café claims to be the first plant-based, gluten-free, cane sugar-free, and GMO-free café in the Middle East. It certainly ticks a lot of boxes. The setting is rustic and natural. We sat at a table in the garden under the shade offered by a canopy of vines. There was even a resident cat that shared the space and they were as calm and untroubled as we felt in this tiny green oasis. We were fortunate to arrive just in time to order from the breakfast menu and we started with the omelette. It was made with chickpea flour and was so jam-packed with spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes, avocados and cashew cream cheese we were worried we’d be too full for more.&nbsp; <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1681717905/Image_2_5_3d9c97e1bc.png" alt="Vegan ‘omelette’ filled with avocado, tomato and mayo on a silver plate ">Mark Flood ﻿Fortunately we were in no rush, so we ordered drinks before thinking about more food. With a bright blue spirulina cream-topped cold brew coffee and cacao, the ‘Ocean Of Good Mood’ drink had us on the aesthetics alone. Then with a hint of orange and the sweetness of the dates we were won over by the taste too. So, for a little taste of food and seclusion heaven, a visit to Seva Table is a must. Vegan travel: Dubai offers sun, sea, sand and vegan food aplenty 


Copenhagen has been one of Europe’s hidden gems until very recently. With the rise in popularity of their Fashion Week, powered by their sustainable design and a more conscious approach, the Danish capital has attracted the best of everything, making it a vibrant hotspot with everything to offer and a perfect vegan travel destination. We visited recently and have come up with the ultimate guide to Copenhagen’s vegan food and culture. To start, let us mention its airport. Whether you are coming or going, Copenhagen is probably one of the most vegan-friendly airports we have ever been to. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/joeandthejuice/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Joe &amp; the Juice</a> is a fail-safe (not only throughout the city, but in all Nordic countries) with their freshly squeezed juices, shakes and sandwiches. If you are looking for a quick bite, most cafés will offer drinks and some vegan buns (check out <a href="https://www.arket.com/en_gbp/cafe.html?utm_source=bing&amp;utm_medium=organic&amp;utm_campaign=DK0404" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">ARKET</a> or <a href="https://www.instagram.com/cphcoffeelab/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Copenhagen Coffee Lab</a>) and if you have time, there are plenty of options for a full meal, ranging from poke to Asian dishes.&nbsp; <h2 class="ql-align-justify">Copenhagen vegan breakfasts…</h2>The Danes love their first meal of the day, and buns and pastries are part of their national culture. Perhaps kick off the day at <a href="https://www.instagram.com/cafe_kaf/?hl=es" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Kaf</a>, a fully vegan Copenhagen restaurant that offers baked goods, brunch, lunch and everything in between. If on the other hand, you prefer a lighter meal, we recommend <a href="https://land-bageriet.dk/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Landbageteriet</a>, an organic bakery with lots of vegan and gluten-free options. We tried their Kanelsnegle (a huge cinnamon roll, typical in the Nordic countries) and their Fastelavnsboller, a delicious, sweet bun filled with pistachio cream and decorated with chocolate and nuts. And only a few meters away, you’ll find <a href="https://www.steelhousecopenhagen.com/visit-copenhagen/copenhagen-dining/torvehallerne" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Torvehallerne</a>, a food market by Norrebro station. You’ll find local and gourmet food, but our best tip is to stop by <a href="https://www.instagram.com/tantensunivers/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Tante T</a>, a tea shop where you’ll find the highest-rated matcha in the city. The market has outdoor seating, so take advantage of it and soak up some vitamin D on a sunny day. Hot tip: Danish breakfast mainly consists of sourdough bread with butter and cheese. However, if you find yourself in a spot with no vegan options, you can generally ask for jam instead.&nbsp; <h2 class="ql-align-justify">…and a spot of shopping</h2>If you fancy mixing pleasures (food being one, and design being another), you are in luck - this is the city for you. Pop into <a href="https://www.instagram.com/apotek_57/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Apotek 57</a>, the cutest little café inside <a href="https://www.instagram.com/framacph/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">FRAMA</a>, a store of namesake multi-disciplinary design brand where you’ll find home goods to skincare products. Another spot you can’t miss is <a href="https://www.instagram.com/louiseroecph/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Louise Roe Studio</a>. Their offering ranges from the sturdiest and most aesthetically pleasing ceramics to beautifully woven rugs. Their <a href="https://www.instagram.com/theroebar/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Roe Bar</a> features a striking metallic kitchen, and although their vegan menu is limited to drinks, bread, a delicious salad, and a plate of great looking hummus, it is a space worth spending some time in. It is also laptop friendly, so if you need to do some work - sit at their bar and watch passers-by. <h2 class="ql-align-justify">A hint of art</h2>Copenhagen has a wide list of museums and galleries; most of them have their own cafés or eateries to have a bite before or after visiting their exhibitions. Statens Museum for Kunst’s own <a href="https://www.instagram.com/kafeteriasmk/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">SMK Kafeteria</a> offers soups and bread as their main vegan food. However, their olive focaccia is worth the trip over - even if you are not interested in art! The Designmuseum also has a cute café, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/formatdmd/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Format</a>, where options include drinks, bread and a yummy seasonal salad. And lastly, don’t miss <a href="https://www.instagram.com/apollo_kantine/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Apollo Kantine</a>, a vegetarian restaurant and café located within the courtyard of the historical cultural institution Kunsthal Charlottenborg. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1681317242/IMG_1532_fbf04879af.png" alt="IMG_1532.png"> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=591908769160271&amp;set=a.591908745826940&amp;type=3" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Apollo Bar</a> <h2 class="ql-align-justify">And some lunch or dinner</h2>As you can probably already tell, Copenhagen has an eclectic range of cuisines. One could argue Middle Eastern food is one of the most vegan-friendly, and we suggest trying out <a href="https://www.instagram.com/therealgreekcph/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">The Real Greek</a> for a quick, but comforting gyros or <a href="https://z-p4.www.instagram.com/gazagrill/?hl=es-la" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Gaza Grill</a> if you find yourself at the Meat Packing District. There you’ll discover <a href="https://lovesanchez.com/taquerias" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Hija de Sanchez</a>, a Mexican restaurant with different locations in the city and with a higher-end sister restaurant called <a href="https://lovesanchez.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Sanchez</a>. We at V-Land UK sought out the best vegan restaurants in Vienna, or at the very least, places which could accommodate vegans - we also came across a host of delightful cafés and even a vegan ice cream parlour.&nbsp; Vienna is well-known for its culture: fine arts, architecture, classical music and museums. Traditionally, Vienna’s most famous culinary attractions include the Sachertorte, a chocolate cake delicacy, and schnitzel, a traditional dish of a fried breaded slice of thin meat. Since the rise of Vienna's vegan scene, there are many fantastic restaurants and cafés catering for all tastes. From vegan burgers to vegan ice cream, here’s where to go if you are ever in town! It is often said that the first meal of the day is the most important. And you’re in luck because a vegan breakfast in Vienna is easy to find. If you like plants and architecture, you will love <a href="https://www.palmenhaus.at/en/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Palmenhaus Brasserie</a> - a magnificent greenhouse in the city centre overlooking the Burggarten gardens. Open daily from breakfast until late, it is the place to be. The vegan menu offers a wide selection from breads to homemade jams paired with vegan butter, muesli with vegan yoghurt or freshly squeezed juices. They also offer&nbsp;vegan cakes, like the famous Austrian apple strudel. Getting a table outside is highly recommended to enjoy the views but beware of the bees! If you find yourself in the hip neighbourhood of Neubau, stop by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/dascafewien/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Das Café</a> - once a furniture shop - to have a midday coffee or a vegan brunch. The relaxed atmosphere and their mismatched furniture will welcome you into the space. Usually frequented by people working or studying, you can get a feel of what the locals do in their day-to-day lives. You can snack on their hummus and raw veggies plate or order their vegan curry. After your break, you can explore the neighbourhood and find the coolest vintage and design shops.&nbsp; If you love a good vegan ice cream, you should visit <a href="https://instagram.com/gelaterialaromana?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">La Romana</a>, also in Neubau. They offer a long list of vegan flavours and hit that perfect gelato texture. If you become a fan of them, fret not, they have locations all around the world. If you fancy trying out another ice cream spot, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/veganistaicecream/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Veganista</a> comes highly recommended and they too have multiple shops in the city. <a href="https://instagram.com/veggiezz_official?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Veggiezz</a> is a fully vegan restaurant in Vienna that you should try out. Our top picks are the Vienna Burger which comes with a crunchy vegan schnitzel patty, fresh salad, cucumber and a garlic sauce with chives and the Bavarian Burger, also with a schnitzel patty, savoury vegan bacon, pickles, red onion and lemon mayonnaise inside a pretzel roll. Their combo includes fries and a drink from their own soda fountain for an affordable price. As well as onion rings and sides, they also offer mouthwatering desserts like vegan tiramisu or vegan cheesecake. It surely sounds like an unmissable stop, doesn’t it? If you are in Germany or Switzerland, check them out - they have restaurants there too! On a last note, don’t miss taking a stroll around Naschmarkt: Vienna’s best-known market has around 120 market stands and restaurants from all sorts of cuisines. From staycations to trips further afield, at V-Land UK, we love to travel. One city we were fortunate to visit several years ago during summer was Prague and we recently had the opportunity to return. This historic city is nestled in the heart of Europe and it is the capital of the Czech Republic.&nbsp; <h2>What to do in Prague</h2>With its rich architecture, it is a beautiful city to visit at any time of the year and there is plenty to keep you enthralled. You will want to visit <a href="https://www.hrad.cz/en/prague-castle-for-visitors" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Prague Castle</a> and the breathtaking <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Vitus_Cathedral" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">St. Vitus Cathedral</a> within its grounds. A wander across the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Bridge" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Charles Bridge</a> is a must. And don’t forget to stop and touch the Statue of John of Nepomuk, as to do so, is said to bring good fortune. Finally, the hourly "The Walk of the Apostles" at <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prague_astronomical_clock" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">astronomical clock</a> in the Old Town Square is a performance worth catching.&nbsp; <h2>What to do in Prague in winter</h2>Our return visit was in winter and we found there to be many more themed activities to keep you entertained. This, for some, would surely make it the best time of the year to visit Prague. During late November, December and Early January, you can hardly turn a corner without stumbling upon a Christmas market. Two of the best markets can be found at the aforementioned Prague Castle and the Old Town Square.&nbsp; Another popular activity in the city at this time of year is outdoor ice skating and there are many pop-up locations to choose from. This presents the opportunity to skate under the tallest building in Prague at the <a href="https://towerpark.cz/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Zizkov TV Tower</a>. What a thrill. Running at a similar time to the Christmas markets is a relatively new festive tradition - the Christmas trams. A fleet of these vehicles are decked out with lights and decorations that can be viewed or ridden as they weave their way through the city streets. This, without doubt, adds a touch of magic to the darker winter evenings. Like most large cities there are plenty of vegan options, but the extent of choice may come as a surprise. Throughout the city you can find numerous restaurants, cafes, bakeries, <a href="https://www.worldvegan.cz/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">a mini supermarket</a> and even a <a href="https://deniteckuje.cz/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">tattooist specialising in floral prints</a>. It certainly punches above its weight. So, to make it a little easier for you, here are our top picks. <h2>Hotel</h2>A vegan hotel is not the norm when travelling but Prague has one. The <a href="https://www.salvatorboutique.cz/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Salvator Boutique Hotel</a> is situated in the heart of the city. This means you will not need to go very far when venturing to the main attractions. It has 38 designer rooms, of varying sizes to fit most needs, and all have a comfortable, contemporary feel. On the ground floor, is their restaurant, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/paloverdebistro/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Palo Verde Bistro</a>. This vegan eatery is Happy Cow top-rated, and it is easy to see why. It serves breakfast staples like oatmeal, waffles and scrambled tofu from 8:00 to 10:00. For the more adventurous of us there is kimchi ‘omelette’ or pea guacamole toast. The latter, a creative spin on the less environmentally friendly avocado. Surely a win. Do return for dinner though. Their lasagne bolognese is the perfect hearty dish for a winter evening. And don’t miss out on sampling a cheeky cocktail or one of their many desserts, tantalisingly displayed in glass casing for all to see.&nbsp; <h2>Bar</h2>If you just want to focus on drinks and nibbles then <a href="https://www.instagram.com/gingerprague/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">bar GINGER</a> has a lot going for it. It is an intimate venue with a cool and vibrant feel. Plant-based snacks are served alongside cocktails, draught beer and wine. Sunday and early week make for a more relaxed visit, whereas it can get quite lively on a Saturday evening. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1670546429/Image_1_731e9fb573.png" alt="vegan bar GINGER in Prague">Mark Flood <h2>Restaurants</h2>There is plenty of vegan food to sample in Prague so you will certainly not go hungry.&nbsp; Another Happy Cow top-rated restaurant, and V-Land favourite, is <a href="https://www.instagram.com/forrest_bistro/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Forrest Bistro</a>. They offer veganised Czech and Asian cuisine alongside coffee and cakes. With friendly staff and a chilled atmosphere you could easily return every day for lunch to sample the rotating menu. If you are a lover of noodles, then you must not miss the opportunity to devour the hot and sour flavours of their Tom Yum. There are many sweet treats like puff pastry cream cake or chai chocolate truffle to tempt you, so do leave room for savouring such indulgences.&nbsp; <a href="https://www.instagram.com/vegansprague/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Vegan's Prague</a> has one of the most unique settings as it is housed in a 16th century building, close to the city’s castle. The tastefully renovated attic space also has an outside terrace with a view overlooking the surrounding buildings. It serves home-style Czech and international cuisine ranging from dumplings to salad to burgers. Something for everyone. To sample the most vibrant and healthy food in Prague, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/lifehouse_bistro/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Lifehouse Bistro</a> is a must. Their food is natural, 100% plant-based and freshly prepared in their very own kitchen. Boost your vitamin and mineral intake with dishes like Greek salad with almond feta, nut cheese topped sourdough or raw banana cake. Their exquisite plant milkshakes, smoothies and hot drinks simply amplify the wholesome eats on offer. You will leave both satiated and rejuvenated. So, to conclude, the best time to visit Prague is during whatever season you decide to go - winter, spring, summer or autumn. There is so much to do and so much to eat, it really doesn’t matter. Vegan travel: Is winter the best time to visit Prague?

On a recent trip to Scotland – we were warmly welcomed by not only the beautiful Scottish landscape and friendly locals, but also the range of vegan food just on our doorstep. We began our trip in Edinburgh spending time with family, which meant finding places that catered well for vegans, non-vegans and kids. Some of our favourite Edinborough vegan discoveries were… <h2>Naked Bakery</h2><a href="https://www.instagram.com/naked_bakery/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Naked Bakery</a> is a vegan gem tucked away in the beautiful cobbled streets, just under a ten-minute walk from the hustle and bustle of Princes Street. Stepping into the cafe, you’re greeted by neon lights, flower walls and vibrantly intricate vegan cupcakes that you’ll want to post all over Instagram immediately. There are tonnes of sweet and savoury options, from waffles to burgers to cakes and smoothie bowls – you’ll be spoilt for choice. Since <a href="https://www.nakedbakery.co.uk/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Naked Bakery</a> specialises in incredibly arty cakes, it felt rude not to try one. Between us, we ordered the white chocolate blondie cake, carrot cake, ‘chicken’ &amp; ‘bacon’ waffles and a ‘cheese’ toastie. The vibrant pink waffles were a feast for the eyes and included some cult favourite meat-free alternatives from <a href="https://www.instagram.com/this.uk/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">This</a>. But the cakes really were the star of the show, extremely generous portions, super moist and a real variety of unique flavours to choose from - they’re truly some of the best vegan cakes we’ve tried. This place is certainly a must for Edinburgh vegans, we can’t wait for our next visit to try even more from their menu. <h2>The Dome</h2>If you’re after a spot of fine dining or have a special occasion to celebrate, then <a href="https://www.instagram.com/thedomeedinburgh/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">The Dome</a><a href="https://www.thedomeedinburgh.com" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent;"> </a>is the place to go for some out of this world Edinborough vegan food. We dined in the Grill room, which is so incredibly ornate and grand, you’ll feel like a princess. They cater for a range of diets including gluten-free, dairy-free and kids, and whilst their vegan options are limited, they certainly don’t scrimp on flavour or experience.&nbsp; For starters, we enjoyed the spiced sweet potato cakes, served with cucumber salsa and a chilli and mango dressing, which was sweet and perfectly zingy. As for the main, they served a seared cauliflower steak with curried chickpea stew, topped with pickled red onions. You really can’t go wrong with a vegan curry, and everything here tasted so fresh and flavoursome, each bite was a culinary experience. And finally, the dessert, a warm chocolate brownie served with coconut ice cream and caramelised mango, and some salted caramel ice cream – delicious!&nbsp; A lot of vegan options in non-vegan restaurants tend to resort to a vegan burger or similar, so dining at <a href="https://www.thedomeedinburgh.com" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">The Dome</a> felt like a real treat, tucking into a carefully considered meal that highlights the diversity of the humble vegetable. It may not be an everyday go-to, but it’s certainly up there as one of our favourite fancy vegan dinners. <h2>Dishoom</h2>With every location you visit,<a href="https://www.dishoom.com" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent;"> </a><a href="https://www.instagram.com/dishoom/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Dishoom</a> is always a unique experience but still offers that homely, hearty vibe, and the vegan options are truly incredible. So we were excited to share the experience with our family at Dishoom’s Edinburgh location. First up, we ordered the okra fries, which are always a must-have at <a href="https://www.dishoom.com" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(75, 172, 72); background-color: transparent;">Dishoom</a>. We also tried the slightly charred gunpowder potatoes, which paired perfectly together with the chole chawal. This chickpea dish was super rich and spicy, certainly not for the faint hearted. This was served with a side of rice and sweet halwa, which was an entirely new flavour for us and really helped balance the spice: it reminded us of the filling of a peshwari naan – so yummy! Overall, Dishoom is a great option for dining with larger groups, as you can order a bunch of small plates to share around and try something new every time.&nbsp; Next up, we headed to Glasgow to spend some time with friends. With Glasgow in particular being renowned for its vegan community and eateries, we were really excited to try a couple of their most recommended places… <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1658311195/Image_1_8_9227e3c6d5.png" alt="Image 1(8).png">Mario Guti/Getty Images via Canva Pro <h2>Puti Vegan Cafe</h2><a href="https://putivegancafe.business.site" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Puti Vegan Cafe</a> was<a href="https://www.happycow.net/best-vegan-restaurants/glasgow-scotland" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"> </a><a href="https://www.happycow.net/best-vegan-restaurants/glasgow-scotland" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">top of the list</a> of vegan places in Glasgow, and for good reason. They offer a range of Pan-Asian dishes created with mock meats and tofu, and honestly, this has to be some of the best vegan food we’ve had.&nbsp; We ordered the salt &amp; pepper chips, mixed veg with sweet &amp; sour sauce, vegan chicken satay on skewers and bibimbap with vegan beef, all of which were incredibly flavoursome. The portion sizes were so generous, and could even be shared between a few people if you wanted to try more from the menu. What really stood out to us was the meat-free alternatives they offered with their dishes, the ‘chicken’ satay skewers were so crispy and realistic in texture, and the bibimbap ‘beef’ dish was so tasty offering something really different from our usual mock meat ‘go-to’s’. Everything was just as you’d hope from your favourite Pan-Asian dishes, without leaving that heavy feeling. The location was just a fifteen minute walk from the city centre, and the staff were incredibly friendly. Our Glaswegian friends (who have a typically veggie/meat-eating diet) couldn’t wait to go back and share it with more of their friends – we wish they had a restaurant in England. We finished the night off at <a href="http://www.instagram.com/abandonshipbar/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Abandon Ship Bar</a>, which we also recommend for delicious cocktails, great vibes and really cool interiors. <h2>The Glasvegan</h2>Another top recommendation for Glasgow vegan food is aptly named, <a href="http://www.instagram.com/theglasveganglasgow/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">The Glasvegan</a>. We were so excited to try this place after seeing their range of vegan pancakes on Instagram.&nbsp; We ordered the death by chocolate pancakes which were irresistibly sweet. They were American-style, fluffy, filling pancakes, covered in a sweet chocolate drizzle and whipped cream: the clue is in the name, we have such a sweet tooth but this did, actually, nearly kill us off. As much as we loved these we would probably go for something savoury and a milkshake next time. We also tried the breakfast roll with square sausage and a potato scone – so quintessentially Scottish and a really satisfying brekkie. They offer a great range of breakfast and lunch options – including a gluten-free menu – as well as a milkshake or smoothie to suit any mood. We can’t wait to visit again and try some of their ice cream milkshakes, which sound to die for. <h2>Ramen Dayo!</h2>With our friend’s recommendation, we headed to Glasgow’s west end to check out the museums, more Glasgow vegan food and <a href="http://www.istagram.com/ramendayo/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Ramen Dayo!</a> The perfect place to duck into on a rainy day if you’re after a bowl of rich, heartwarming ramen. Although very unassuming from the outside, stepping into <a href="https://ramendayo.com" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(75, 172, 72);">Ramen Dayo!</a> feels like stepping straight into a traditional Japanese eatery. It’s an intimate, incredibly atmospheric place decked out with the most beautiful Japanese decor and memorabilia.&nbsp; We ordered the steamed vegetable gyoza dumplings to start, which were so tasty and moist, along with the togarashi fries. For mains, we had the tantanmen ramen with textured vegetable protein and the shiitake and porcini ramen. The tantanmen was especially creamy with a slight kick, and the vegetable protein was so meat-like that it even comes with a warning on the menu. The shiitake ramen was bursting with delicious umami flavours and a plethora of textures from the assortment of mushrooms. And if ramen isn’t your thing, they have lots of other options for both vegans and non-vegans, from katsu curry to donburi dishes, so it’s the perfect place to visit with friends. Just make sure to book ahead, this place is incredibly popular!&nbsp; We absolutely loved our visit to Scotland and discovering some of the best vegan food there is to try. When travelling, what we can do to help the problem is to be careful to avoid these types of activities, and instead, support those that allow us to get closer to the animal world without altering its balance. But how do we recognise which activities are ethical and which are not? In most cases, it’s best to use common sense, and as consumers, we must not be afraid to ask direct questions regarding the care and wellbeing of the animal in front of us. But to better take stock of the situation, below we have a look and compare the opinions of two associations aimed at respecting animal rights,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.peta.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(102, 185, 102); background-color: transparent;">PETA</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bornfree.org.uk/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(102, 185, 102); background-color: transparent;">Born Free</a>. <h2>Aquariums, zoos and circuses</h2>No zoo or aquarium can replicate the natural habitat of a wild and free animal, and in some facilities animals are forced to learn unnatural behaviours to entertain an audience, although this is most commonplace within circuses. It is for this reason that aquariums, zoos and circuses are on the list of activities to avoid for tourists for both&nbsp;<a href="http://www.instagram.com/peta" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(102, 185, 102); background-color: transparent;">PETA</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.instagram.com/bornfreefoundation" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(102, 185, 102); background-color: transparent;">Born Free</a>. Wild animals travel hundreds of miles a day, and forcing them to spend their lives locked in a cage or tank is unnatural and cruel. Many animals suffer from stress, and a large number end up dying prematurely due to unsuitable living conditions. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/v-land/image/upload/v1661881683/Image_1e_ec2e1e6a49.png" alt="small monkey pressing against the glass enclosure with its hands and a person doing the same"><a href="https://stock.adobe.com/uk/images/monkey-playing-with-toddler-girl/94354725?prev_url=detail" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(102, 185, 102);">Adobe Stock</a> <h2>Animal rides</h2>Animal rides are considered differently depending on the animal involved. While PETA recommends avoiding any type of animal riding (including horses, especially when used to pull carriages in urban sites), for Born Free only riding an elephant is unethical. So what about animals like camels? This tends to be a grey area in the world of animal rights, but let’s see why.&nbsp; After various accidents to people who had decided to ride an elephant, these animals were finally declared illegal to ride. This is because elephants are wild animals, which should not be domesticated and forced to live among humans, nor carry them on their backs. This is different in the case of camels, which are considered to many as the ‘ships of the desert’. Today camels are mostly domestic animals, accustomed to humans and in some cases, in need of them. Born Free has stated that there is no evidence suggesting that camel riding is harmful to the animal, suggesting that riding a camel can be acceptable, if the animal is willing and not abused or exploited. It is good, though, that before proceeding with the activity the tourist makes sure that the animal is first of all in its habitat, the desert; second, that it does not appear undernourished, abused, ill; that the owner speaks kindly to the animal when giving orders, rather than using abrupt or violent gestures. <h2>Swimming with dolphins and visiting dolphinariums</h2>On this both PETA and Born Free are of the same opinion; swimming with dolphins is wrong, as is visiting a dolphinarium. Although dolphins may seem like ‘smiling’ animals, this does not mean that they are happy to spend their lives in a pool instead of the ocean. If you are a lover of these animals, the most ethical alternative you have to admire them is to try to spot them in the open sea during a dolphin watching excursion. This type of activity does not guarantee sighting, but if you are lucky enough you will be able to spot these beautiful creatures live, in their habitat, living happily, wild and free. <h2>Other animal encounters</h2>Among other activities not recommended by the two associations are encounters and selfies with baby tigers (blacklisted by both PETA and Born Free). These cubs, often seen as ‘big cats’, have most of the time been separated from their mothers too early, and eradicated from their natural habitat. Let’s avoid giving money to those who perpetuate this type of business, no matter how cute an orphaned cub may look in a selfie. Born Free also condemns other types of encounters, such as those with reptiles, primates and birds, although they make exceptions, especially with regard to birds, in cases where the animals are farmed, born and raised in captivity and unable to survive without humans. Although, there are also cases in which the bird is captured as an adult, and pinioned (surgical removal of the end joint of the wing) to prevent flight. As in the case of camels, if you want to go ahead with these activities, it is always good to ask the owner as many questions as possible, and try to realise what are the real conditions in which the animal lives, or to avoid completely, and opt to try and spot them whilst sightseeing instead. <h2>Safaris</h2>Safaris are certainly the best way to get to know and approach the animal world without disturbing it. One of the reasons, other than the cost, why safaris are still not as popular today as zoos or aquariums is probably that you cannot be sure of spotting all the animals during the activity. Being free in nature, as they should, it will be the animal’s discretion whether they want to be seen or not. Even here, however, it is good to avoid the type of safari where the tour guide is so insistent as to get too close to the animals to please the tourist, or even to feed them in the attempt to attract them close to the vehicle. Humans should limit themselves to observing, without interacting with the interplay of animals’ lives.
